Flow Star was contracted by HSA Home Warranty Services to repair my boiler. Instead of repairing it, they diagnosed that it was unable to be salvaged, and that I needed to purchase a new boiler. They wanted to upsell me into a $12,000 new system. I was hesitant to do so, because I did not feel that I was given a satisfactory reason that it was not repairable. Instead of immediately taking their recommendation I went to a heating company that has great reputation for honesty in Anchorage for a 2nd opinion. The other company quickly evaluated the system, replaced a defective part, and for $600 had me back up and running again in 24 hours. They evaluated the reasons Flow Star claimed necessitated replacement and completely disagreed. After it had been repaired by another company, I asked Flow Star on the phone why they had recommended complete system replacement, when it could have been repaired. I was told that they knew it could be repaired, but they did not feel like the furnace would probably last more than a couple years anyway, so they wanted to just replace it so I wouldn't hold them responsible when it broke again in a couple years. I am very upset that this relevant information was not presented to me, or to HSA, as an option, in order for the homeowner and parties responsible for payment to make an educated decision. Though I do agree that the furnace is probably on its last legs, I also know that it is my right as homeowner to be given all the facts so I can make an informed decision regarding repair or replacement. I feel that Flow Star was only interested in making a sale of a new boiler, and that they dishonestly misrepresented the condition of the unit they were contracted to repair. This was not a decision they should have made unilaterally, and it was dishonest to misrepresent the condition of the malfunctioning boiler to me. I would never allow this company to work in my home again, and I will be spreading the word to my friends and colleagues. I was honestly shocked to see that they currently have 29 5-star Google reviews, and I looked through some of them. It was not a surprise to see that it appears that all the reviews here that mention boilers or furnaces show that a replacement was performed, and many water heater replacements as well. I would advise caution in accepting this company's advice to replace units, and always obtain a second opinion from a more reputable company first.

This is a response to the owner's comment. Kara was very apologetic and nice. However, I got a call after I posted my review. I waited for a supervisor to call me in the morning around 8:30a as Demetri promised and no one called me; I'm guessing Demetri either didn't relay the message or the company didn't care. I gave this company ample time to be accountable and follow through as promised, which they did not (referring to the promised call back from a supervisor). As for the comment about there was nothing they could do to change my mind meaning change my honest and rationale review of my experience, why didn't the owner himself, Jerry, directly reach out to me versus writing a reply my comment trying to save face nor has Demetri reached out to me to apologize himself. Let me reiterate that Tom was fantastic as he was on-time and efficient; I would recommend Tom and be glad to hire him, but not with this company. The dispatchers were awesome too. Demetri was not. I did explain that I was willing to pay for another diagnostic and possible repair cost if it was no error on Tom as I found it suspicious that my hot water wasn't working after the heating repair. Demetri could have reassured my concerns and angst by being professional and standing by the company's work done by Tom to come out and just double check. Back to the company couldn't do anything to change my review, I already fixed the heating issue myself. What was I supposed to suggest? Kara nor the owner made any suggestions themselves. Again, I am not impressed with how the owner responded by replying to my review nor the follow-up experience after paying $400. Customer service is most important. I am always willing to wait or pay more for service as I have with other businesses.Initial experience was very positive. Tom came out to my residence to fix the no heat (I had hot water) I was getting right away over this weekend on short notice. I paid a total of $400 ($149 for diagnostic and $251[this was with the $25 coupon discount from their website] for the igniter for the furnace and labor - they do a flat rate). I didn't care how much I paid as long as I had heat since it's winter now. The next morning, I noticed I ran out of hot water and did not have hot water. After a long day, I return home thinking the hot water would be back to work. Still no hot water. I called them and Demetri, the after hours on-call tech, called me back. I explained to him of my situation and how I have no clue how heating systems worked, but found it odd that after Tom fixed my heat I no longer had hot water the very next day. I asked him if someone could stop by my residence to see if Tom may have forgot to reset or turn something back on pertaining to hot water without cost, but I was willing to pay if that wasn't the case. Demetri immediately stated that it would cost me another $149 for him to come out regardless because the furnace heating and hot water are different matters and he did not even bother to confirm what kind of system I had. I informed him that I'm completely oblivious to how things work regarding this topic, but I need hot water to take a shower for work tomorrow. He kept saying I understand and repeating himself. So, he agreed that a supervisor or someone in charge would contact me the next morning around 8:30a. I did not receive a call from anyone. Thankfully, I fixed the hot water issue myself after researching videos on YouTube. I do not plan to ever use this company again nor do I recommend anyone else to do so. I believe customer service is very important. They failed. I will try another company for future issues. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. All they care about is taking your money.
