Back during the McKinley Administration, my basement drain system was installed and it worked great. People driving by with their horses and buggies no doubt admired the new revolutionary notion of indoor plumbing. Well, the plumbing marvel of 1898 turned into a nightmare day before yesterday, as our main drain line to the manhole in the street finally counter-attacked. While it was fun to watch the dog floating around in the laundry tub in the basement, our experiment with the past -- no toilet or sink use during the crisis -- quickly lost its charm. Enter James Liam from Roto-Rooter. Good-natured and businesslike, it did not take him long to pop out the cleanout plug in the basement and go to town with his motorized snake. A century of debris in the pipe, and the roots of two long-gone trees, did not stand a chance. In under an hour we were once again spellbound by the coriolus effect in the basement deep sink and flushing away giddily in the two bathrooms. No more trips to the gas station powder room! No more washing dishes in a plastic tub and dumping the water in the flowerbed! Back to the 21st Century! Who says time travel is impossible? The plumber was excellent, quality materials and workmanship, he was professional and courteous too. He loved dogs too which made the appointment so much more pleasant because I didn’t need to lock the dog up to get my new hot water heater.
