Having received a mailer promising $500 bonus for going solar, I called ModernCity. I suspected my roof had problems, so I made certain to tell the salesman up front about my concerns on the roof. They pitched a good option, a bit expensive, but it made sense, and I signed up for solar. The roof site inspection provided by Moderncity Solar deemed the roof to be in “really good condition,” and “ready for solar.”
However, a lengthy rain revealed at least four leaks. I walked the roof myself afterward and found cracks and splits all over the place. By this time I exceeded the 7-day window of time to back out of the contract with no obligation.
Moderncity Solar offered to roll the cost of a new roof into the solar loan, and even verbally offered more than $1500 in incentives to make it possible (plus the $500 kick-back advertisement from the beginning). I asked for this offer in writing, and received nothing. In the end, the solar equipment plus the added cost of a new roof was more debt than I was comfortable taking, so I backed out of the deal. I asked Moderncity Solar to meet me half-way on the $1,000 cancelation fees in light of the inaccurate roof assessment, and because the project turned out to be bigger than originally pitched. I left two voicemails, a text, and an email for the sales manager, which are un-returned to date. A few days ago I received denial by email from a different department.
I am surprised that Moderncity Solar was prepared to install a full-scale system on a bad roof. I am also surprised that they believed the roof was in good condition when it was not. If it wasn’t for that long rain, I would have solar on a bad roof that leaks, meaning I would need to pay Moderncity Solar to come out, remove my solar panels so I can re-do my roof and pay them again to reinstall the solar.
I don't think their solar is bad or that Moderncity is a bad company, but I am disheartened by the way this situation was handled. It will take a lot for me to recommend or use ModernCity Solar in the future.
