Frankie has been working for Smith & Keene for a long time. I have over heard a lot of good things about him. Like how he will make sure that when he leaves a customers house that everything is up and running. Also, he fills in the customer about what happened, what he did to fix it and what they can do to prevent it from happening again. I would recommend Frankie for any ac/heating repairs or maintenance.

Jonathan Mulder and another employee of Smith & Keene came out to our house on April 12th and installed a new heating and a/c unit from Carrier to replace my 17 year old unit that was still working. I was being proactive because of the age. Jonathan and his helper did an excellent job on the install, they were very polite and he explained everything to me about operating the new system. I recently had to replace my heat pump and air handler. Got several estimates from 4 different HVAC companies and all were companies in good standing that had been in business for many years however, I decided to go with Smith and Keene not only because they had great pricing but also because they didn't try to take advantage of an older woman living on her own. They took really great care in my home during install to protect my house from dirt and any damage. They answered any questions and worked until it was done. Had trouble getting it to work but came right back the next morning 1st thing to get it working. Turned out it was my duct work but they took care of it all. On November 11, 2014 at 742am, one of their trucks ran a bus stop while the bus was loading children and even blowing its horn. The driver was in a hurry to get to the Hardees rather than the safety of the children and against the law that states that all vehicles are supposed to stop while a bus has its stop sign out and loading and or unloading children. The driver of the their cube truck was also very very rude and did not care at all. I will not do any type of business with any company that runs bus stops and has very rude drivers. All of this was caught on the buses cameras as well. The truck number was 11111.

Very unhappy with these guys. Bought their top of the line Lennox system 10 years ago and have had a service/maintenance contract (not always with S&K) every year. My system failed the first week of November so I called them to repair it. It turned out to be the heat exchanger, a part with a 20 year warranty. I felt relieved. They also said I should replace the burners while at it so I followed their advice. After waiting a couple of weeks for the new heat exchanger to arrive, they installed it and the new burners. It cost me over $1200. Unfortunately, I was told that they needed another part before it could be used. Several months of winter passed without the part arriving. We waited in a cold house, anxiously hoping it could be repaired soon. Then, after calling to check on the part for at least the 10th time I was told that it was unavailable and likely never to come in at all... but they would be glad to sell me a new one and put half of what I had already spent into the new system. They promised me they would give me their best price. So, feeling trapped and cold, I invited their salesman to visit and provide estimates. To make a long story a little shorter, their estimate was more than $3K over any of the 3 other estimates I got from reputable HVAC dealers...for similar systems with the same efficiency ratings. So I chose not to buy from them again. When installing the new system (a TRANE), the new company pointed out several major mistakes S&K made when they installed my system and pointed to them as the reason for early failure of the Lennox. I would be happy to share that information with anyone considering a new system. It has been almost two months since talking with them about this but they haven't contacted me at all, not even to check and see if I wanted to buy another system from them...or even to see if we had heat. They should have refunded my money. They should have not tried to rip us off for a new system. And most importantly, they should have never left us in the cold for 31/2 months. Go elsewhere.

Not recommended this smith & keene repair & service to anyone. Be aware! You will be hooked after you called them. Be prepared big money to give them for nothing and zero resolution once they come to your house! This company (and its workers) just try to make $$$, they're not honest of service for any thing that related to your house HVAC. My system was installed by this contractor several years ago. The new installation was fine as several years ago. But the repair/service from smith & keene is very bad. I called them and a lady in office hooked me up with a tech on the field. He came to my house and checked why my Carrier Infinity AC not working properly, because there is no cooling air coming out inside the house. After he open the outside AC panel and touched pipes around the unit, he told me that there is hard to find the problem and right now the AC unit working fine!? Approx about ten minutes checked he put the panel back and he was not even come inside to check other AC's related components, he asked me for $89 of service call (?) without any result/resolution! After paid him with CC there was no paper or receipt for me. He told me he'll mail hard copy to my address then he left. I checked account in my CC and the charge was already posted. I waited over a week but there is no receipt by mail, nothing and I had to contacted the office. Currently, I still don't have invoice receipt that smith & keene charged me for a tech person was unable to find error on my AC. Avoid this company. Try to find the other vendor with good knowledge and honestly working that help customers to resolve HVAC problem. Not just come then go. This is bad habit of service. This contractor come to customer's house just for one purpose: collect free money from customers; once they stepped on your property they will charge right after every 10 to 15 minutes without give customer advice, even thing(s) they are unable to identify the symptom on HVAC.
(Addition information: One week later, I had other different and trusted HVAC contractor company from other area came to my house and checked the entire system, he used his multimeter and other digital gauges to read/check electrical components, gas coils, checked inhouse thermostat, inside coils/tubes, air filter, drainage pipes, etc... and he found that the capacitor inside the outdoor my AC unit needed to be replaced. He explained to me that there are six major problems that the AC unit won't cooling air inside the house. He did replaced the capacitor in the next few days (this part needed order) and charged me one time with fair price (as he came to my house twice)). My AC unit is running and producing the cooling air very good now, but this result because of without smith & keene involved!

Smith and Keene is not knowledgeable and is all about coming to your home, staying five minutes, adding freon (needed or not) and claiming to have fixed the problem. We actually had to have another company come in and remove freon because they added it when it wasn't needed!!! Beware.
Had water coming up under my floors near my air handler. Stopped in Wednesday after and they had a tech out Thursday morning. I was already the 3rd stop for Donnie and he was great! He explained the process along the way and preventative actions to take. It was a super fix and He was very nice and thorough and I will use this company again!

Installed a full home generator. Ricky, Troy, Alex and team were professional and kept me abreast of the installation progress. This was the 2nd time I've called on Smith and Keene. The first was for installation of a 20KW generator for the house last year and this last time was to replace my worn-out PTAC (combined a/c and heat pump) unit in my sunroom. In both cases, everything was handled quickly and professionally by their sales representative Todd Dodge and by all their installers and techs. I give them all a 5 star rating. I've recommended Smith and Keene to many of my neighbors and friends and will happily continue to do so in the future.

Poor quality, incompetent techs, and lazy company! Our home built by Stephen Alexander Homes had Smith and Keene install HVAC, plumbing, and gas lines. We have a furnace duct leaking when it rains, and they don’t know what to do about it and the tech told me that he doesn’t get on roofs so he can’t check it out. Everywhere the plumbing was installed in the slab had to be Jack hammered out and moved because they buried it all in the wrong locations per the house plan, which caused damage to our foundation cinder blocks. Neighbor had her gas lines leaking for months that they installed and a leaking drain pipe, which they only repaired the hole with putty. They didn’t wire our heater correctly, so when winter came our upstair’s heat wouldn’t come on, this is the only problem that they have been able to fix in our home. We also have a drain pipe smacking against our fiberglass shower when water drains in it because they installed the drain right up again the shower wall. Nightmare after nightmare!

Signed a contract to replace both outside and inside unit of a Carrier Heat Pump after a catastrophic failure of a compressor in the outside unit. Contract signed 25 June. Informed by contract administer on 26 July that machinery necessary for the installation was in, however the earliest date they could be at the house for installation was 10 August. Crew arrived at 10 August and installed complete system in less than one work day. Reason given for the length of time to final repair was delay in receiving machinery due to disruption of the supply chain caused by the pandemic. Communication during the waiting phase of the repair was very poor. I had to seek out the contract administer to get any status.
received no calls to confirm the 10 August date of repair as the time approached, and finally had to spend a long time making phone calls the day before installation to get final installation. The installation itself was very professional. It was very apparent from the start the the Technicians were knowledgeable, competent, and no nonsense, and completed a difficult installation by that afternoon. The purchase of a 300 dollar stand alone ac unit and a fan prevented total abject suffering during the waiting period through the head of a SE Virginian Summer.

Our air cleaner stopped working, Frankie their service man was great and honest, he had it up and running in no time. He found that I had bent a switch tab when I cleaned it. He didn't overcharge or make anything up. He went on to explain exactly how to clean the unit step by step. VERY pleased with the service and will highly recommend them.

In Aug 2020, I spoke with sales and ordered a natural gas standby generator. They said installation would be a few months because of a back log and they would coordinate with Columbia Gas on installation as a different meter would be required. Unit was finally installed Dec 2020 but Columbia Gas still has not even scheduled their end of the work. Speaking with S&K Sales and billing, THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE even back in Aug and has affected multiple customers. They did not disclose I would be billed for a unit Months before it could be hooked up to (existing but apparently insufficient) gas line and tested. Still no schedule for gas hook up as of 1 Mar 2021

This is what Smith and Keene’s $1800 repair did to our AC. Frozen solid inside and out. Techs came out near 10 times and instead of searching for a refrigerant leak once they found the refrigerant was low, they “topped” it off and advised us our coil needed to be replaced instead. Had a different company come and tell us because of their lack of due diligence in finding the leak we likely have a damaged unit now also. Oh and their so called 24/7 emergency service is a joke! Takes them 3 days to come out every time. I’m sitting here with two toddlers in sweltering heat due to their ineptitude.
Needed two new units to replace old HVAC systems and Smith & Keene were great in doing estimate with options and had the best price for value. Also got them to install mini-split ductless new HVAC unit for room-over-garage which now allows us much better control and efficiency. Installers were fantastic: very professional and knowledgeable and worked without breaks over 3 days to complete install in some very cramped and hot spaces. Even added a wireless thermostat ! I couldn't be more pleased with the service and quality.

Left my children's rooms without heat despite promises all over their website of providing 24/7 emergency service. Weekdays only for warranty repairs???
HVAC system under warranty, woke up in the middle of the night to a heavy burning smell. Shut the system off and called the 24 hour service line. I was told that no warranty service is done on the weekends and I would have to call back Monday. So, because it's a warranty issue my family is only worth their time on weekdays?? It was in the 20's last night and will be again tonight and the call taker from Smith and Keene was cold and without compassion citing contract language and technical details- she could have cared less about not having heat in our children's bedrooms in freezing weather. Once the warranty is over we will be doing business with a company that does not leave people without heat in freezing weather.

20+ years ago I had new roof shingles installed. I had no idea that the rusty ugly exhaust pipes from the furnace and water heater protruding through the roof were not part of the reroof at that time. After the reroof was done I was told that work needed to be done by an HVAC company. Finally I got the chance to replace those pipes. Luckily I called Smith & Keene which was a blessing even beyond the pipe replacement. Upon the final part of the job, Smith & Keene discovered that my roof sheathing was too rotten to complete the job. A solar company had insisted on holding me to a contract to install on my rotten insufficient 3/8 inch wood sheathing that I had argued with the solar company was a concern from the beginning. (That's another story.) The honest, wonderful Smith & Keene contractor would not go forward with the job on my rotten wood sheathing. They were patient with me until I had roof sheathing replaced on that part of the house. I am so thankful and grateful that Smith & Keene has a standard to do a job right.
The installation team arrived on time, was respectful of the property, quiet and finished when expected.

It was a stress-free experience and I would recommend S & K to friends looking to have similar work done.

I have used Smith and Keene for more than five years as my HVAC service. They are always responsive in scheduling, and their technicians are friendly and efficient. I recently had to have the unit replaced upstairs, and Heather in scheduling was so kind to work us in quickly so we didn't have to live another two weeks without A/C. Anthony and his crew were great with the install. Can not recommend S & K enough.
After prepaying for AC repair/parts and being assured work would be completed in a timely manner, it took 9 days from start to finish during July. Simple replacement of mother board which the tech said had blown. I saw him touch a tool to it and sparks flew all around the old board so I guess it did blow!!! He failed to re-attach or purposefully detached the lead wire for the heat. When weather changed we called another company because we had no heat and had no confidence in Smith and Keene. This tech found the wire detached, reattached it and we had heat. Unfortunately, we had to pay $99 but worth it to not have to deal with Smith and Keene again! Begs the question, did S and K do this to assure another service call ?? Not happy! Other issues but this should suffice to warn others!

My 1st experience with Smith and Keene was great! Todd was super helpful and timely coming out to my home to look at our AC unit to determine what needed to be done. Then, on the day of installation Jonathan and Mike were GREAT! They were super friendly and completed the job professionally. With any changes that needed to be done Jonathan made me aware before they did anything. They left my home clean as if they were never there and my AC now works great! I would definitely recommend them to friends and family !

I am trying to respond to your response to my experience, however I could not do it, so here it is. We paid over 7,000 gram in a brand new out side unit back on 2017. Because both units were not replace at the same time I have to spend another 9500 AGAIN!!! Because the unit at the attic burned and messed up the one outside with no way to be fixed and since you guys didn’t recommend to replace both at the same time I was with out heat for 5 days. I had tried to call several times even before the unit got buen however I NEVER FOT A HUMAN BEEN ON YHE PHONE!!! my husband David Williams have left PLANTY !!!! of messages with out NO ONE EVER GETTING BACK TO HIM!!! so I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU GUYS TO DO NOTHING FOR NO ONE!!!! since my experience was and has been HORRIBLE IN EVERY WAY!!!!
I want to say, my wife and I have been loyal customers for maqny years, the is or second unit, and refered by daughter who bought a heat pump. Thae unit we have is gas, with central air. My complaint is a lack of concern from the service dept. We had just had our unit inspected, all looked great. The next day some where between 1pm and 3pm it quit. I called service to request service, but was told it would be the next day. After talking to the service manager a tech came out that evening, (poor guy ) it is hot in the attic. Need a control board. called this morning 8:30, confirmed it needed an board, they will contact the parts coordinator and call me back. 9:30 am no call, I called haven't found the parts coordinator. calle back an hour later, and the part will be in tomorrow, said they will call when comes in and set a time to install. Now, it is not so much i have to wait for the part, as it is having to keep calling to get an answer. Why could i not be informed as to the progress, and where was the parts coordinator ? This is not the way to treat a long time customer who maintains a service contract. Sorry for this post, is 92degree's in this house, and I'm upset.

I had my system installed 3 years ago by them in the Hampton/Newport News Virginia area. I’ve recently been having issues and have called 3 times. I’ve gotten the voicemail all 3 times and left a detailed message with my contact number asking for a call back. I have yet to get a call back. Customer Service could use some updating.

Tech came out in December because auxiliary heating associated w heat pump wasn't coming on. This is a Lennox unit only 3 yrs old, installed and maintained by Smith and Keene. After replacing the thermostat and 3 visits later the problem still isn't resolved! And they were CLOSED during the most recent cold snap because of 4 inches of snow on the ground!!

We called to have our air conditioner looked at because it was leaking from the attic. We got an appointment immediately the following morning. Nick called to tell us he was on his way and he was on time. In a matter of minutes he determined the problem, we had moved furniture around in the attic and disrupted the drain pipe. He was polite and honest-we did not have a repair charge-this company can be trusted-use Smith & Keene for your HVAC issues-I wish I had them do our installation, I wont call anyone else for repairs!

Worst company I've ever worked for! Does not care about the employees at all. 95% of the employees are drug addicts and criminals
I would caution all to receive promised service in writing. My salesman was knowledgeable and courteous. The office staff to date has been accommodating. There seems to be many different opinions within the company ultimately becoming the costumer's problem. What the salesman tells you may not happen. I purchased a tankless hot water heater to replace a fully functioning tank type. It took a month to schedule, then another month of visits before it could function. With a combination of black iron, galvanized, and multiple regulators it worked. I had to call the technicians back as they never tightened the gas train in the garage, and it was leaking. At the first 20 degree day the system froze. The plumbing department stated that will happen, let the water run overnight. Thankfully my salesman did try to help by sending one of the technicians back to at least put the pipe insulation on all of the exposed pipes. Technicians seem to know their trade, just a question who is driving the bus.

Excellent quality work, professional installers. I had them add a zone to my hvac system to allow separate temp control to my 2nd floor. The job was completed quicker than estimated and the system works like a charm. So now I have 2 zones on a single hvac system.
Worst customer service from the Virginia Beach office. Absolutely no follow-up, did not stick to the timeline as agreed, and refused to respond to repeated voicemails and emails. I do not recommend them to anyone.
Smith and Keene were at my home today. I asked for the same technician as last time and the dispatch receptionist made the extra effort to make the request. When the technician arrived, he was focused on maintaining my unit. I walked outside and asked several questions and he helped me establish an approximate period of time that the unit would probably last. The units for my place are not too expensive, but the kind of money that I like to budget and plan. At this point, you may think I am some type of family member, but let me assure you, I am not. Smith and Keene have told me from the start what to do and I followed their guidance. I asked a lot of questions and their staff never skirted any answers. Thanks to all of the technicians and office staff.
Ten years ago, I bought a Trane from Smith and Keene. The salesman explained everything and the delivery and experience was excellent. The service after the sale has been responsible and the technician, Dennis, is considerate, on-time, and above all well trained. I do not know who to thank, but I think Smith and Keene are excellent.

Smith and Keene listened and didn’t just try and sell me something I didn’t need. This is why I have used them twice at two different residences and will again.
New construction home and they installed our toilets incorrectly. We have two button (eco-friendly) toilets and they swapped the lines for two of the toilets in our home. Additionally, in our master bathroom, we have a sewage smell that comes at least once a week... they come out and see/smell nothing wrong. They don't see any leaks on their side, so there must not be an actual issue. Toilet seats were installed crooked... I mean, about 20% of the seat was actually hanging off. It's not even that there are issues, its that they come out and cant find anything wrong because they dont care to actually look. It's super frustrating.
***Editing to add update*** the toilet issues have since been fixed, after calling and saying how there was still a smell, and requesting them to check the seals… one of the seals was not installed correctly… because it didn’t exist. But, alas… it is fixed.

These guys really need to perform maintenance on van 1704. I think their accelerator is stuck and their turn signals are busted. Felt bad for the driver as he weaved in and out of traffic on I-64, must have been scary driving that fast and not being able to use your turn signals.
WE recently had a 20+ year old system fail and these folks we uncharacteristically prompt and attentive to all the issues we brought forth during our service consultation. At every intersect, they listened to our needs an delivered flawlessly on the product and service. The two Service Staff that did the install were focused on the care of our house making sure to protect floors, walls, attic space, and exterior landscape. They took the time to brief us on every aspect of the new unit and were most professional in answering all our questions without rushing us along or deferring us to another dept or person. I can honestly say that their company believes in putting its customers and staff at the front of its business model.
I have called every day since Thursday, July 9th, 2020, for Emergency HVAC Service (their website states 24/7 Emergency Service Available) for an HVAC system that is under warranty by Smith & Keene and they told me the first available service call is Monday, July 13th. They said that they make houses with no AC their priority. Found out further that they will only respond to houses with no AC in Emergency status, regardless if their technicians are busy or not. I am also of the belief that if I was a paying customer (one they could actually get the emergency service labor rate) and not dealing with a system under warranty, that I would have had someone out to the house already. This is completely unsatisfactory. Their staff has been completely unprofessional and this is not representative of a company that has been around for 73 years. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
*** UPDATE (7/14/20) *** System has yet to be fixed. Technician came out on Monday (7/13/20) and agreed that the system had two leaks in it (one at the valve at the unit and one on the coil block on the air handler). They then had to order the parts as they neither keep any parts on hand nor were willing to remove the parts from any of the other systems that they had on hand. I spoke to them today and they initially said that the earliest that they could get out to my house would be Friday. Are you Shi**ing me? After a not so pleasant conversation, they said they could get out to the house on Wednesday morning, 07/15/20. I asked them why they couldn't have there emergency technicians come out tonight and they said that they could not do that. This has been the worst experience of my life as far as dealing with customer service. If there were a grade less than an F, they would receive it. I CANNOT REITERATE THIS MORE, DO NOT USE SMITH & KEENE FOR ANYTHING. YOU WILL ONLY BE DISAPPOINTED IN THE END.

A HUGE shout out to Jerry Moots and his crew at Smith & Keene for our new addition. We haven’t had AC since last June due to a lightning strike to our house and after months and months of fighting the insurance company and them denying the claim, his company stepped up and helped us out. I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in October, so the fight for myself took priority over the fight with the insurance company to get this problem resolved. Well Smith & Keene set an excellent example for what true community is. They came today early and were so amazing and so professional and we finally have a cool house without having to use 5 window units. We do NOT recommend this company at all! I would not even give them a star, but had too in order to write this review. Last week, or top floor AC unit stopped working. Since we live in a house that is less than two years old, we called Smith and Keene due to the warranty we have. They told us our AC issue was not an emergency, they would be out until some time Monday. Then at 4:30 in the afternoon, the repair guy called and said he was on his way. He was at our house for 15 minutes, flipped a breaker and put in some coolant in the unit and left. No trouble shooting, just left. Needless to say, 4 days later, it's still broken. Smith and Keene will not come back and fix the problem until after the weekend again. We should be a priority due to the fact our technician did not fix the problem the first time. It was the end of the day and the guy just wanted to go home. He put a band aid on the problem and walked away with $155. We are so disgusted with this company and how they think they can get away with what they did to us during 100 degree weather.
After this issue, we will never use them again. I would rather pay someone who wants to work and actually gets the job done right the first time.
Smith & Keene replaced 2 HVAC in our home, completed both units in 5.5 hours total. EXCELLENT service, had no problems at all. Technicians were very professional and respectful of the property. Would HIGHLY recommend them to friends and neighbor.

The June 2020 installation, etc went well and I left a positive review. We replaced our old unit because it was unreliable, causing us a lot of nickle and dime repairs...usually on the weekend. Not ONE time did the heater/ac fail during the week. ALWAYS..

May 17th 2018 I had an appointment to have my unit which is not working to be repaired. At noon when I called I was told that my technician would be at my home after the call he was presently on therefore I was next in line. As I am writing this review it is now 5:30 I have called 5 times told the same story each time and yet I am still waiting for a technician who has never arrived! Therefore Smith & Keene either hold no honor for customer service! Or their service technician is dead on the highway someplace and they don't care about their employees! Either way I am left with no working unit and stood up being told the same story over and over and over again!
Literally just received a phone call from Smith and Keene being told the same exact story I have been told 5 times today! They are stating that I will have a technician here at some point within this day but have no idea when that will be. I've lost a day of work! I have had to remain in a sweltering house waiting for a technician to never show! I will revise this review if they actually show up and do the work that needs to be done! But to pay as much money as I'm getting ready to pay for this technician if he actually shows up; & for the disrespect and lack of customer service and communication is CRIMINAL!!!!!
Well.... at 7 pm a technician finally arrived. Was kind, courteous and efficient! However $1,200 later while I have AC now I will have to replace my unit. That's fine I'm good with that however, I still do not feel that Smith and Keene appreciates their customers nor do they know how to communicate to their customers. Any issues they may be having with scheduling appointments for service! Therefore, I will try not to ever call them again! I'm sorry if one of your technicians decided to quit today that is your problem not mine! But the lack of communication, is all on Smith and Keene! Find better dispatchers and receptionist who are willing to actually do their job! Oh wait! I'll do their job! hire me! And I will do a thousand percent better job than what you've already got employed! Because you're answering service, dispatchers, and receptionist are laxidasical, irresponsible, and rude! Heat unit went out and I requested Todd the salesman to give an estimate on a new unit. I had dealt with him in the past and found him to be honest and trustworthy. I purchased a new unit and due to cold temperatures was concerned about my family's health. Todd even took it on his own to bring me a portable heater to help keep us warm until the unit was installed. Also, Smith & Keene called that same day to tell me they would be out in two days to install my new unit. They arrived as scheduled and Jacob the installer went right to work and removed the old and installed the new unit that same day. He tested and made sure we were completely satisfied before he left the site. We had one minor concern that was quickly resolved to our satisfaction. This company went out of its way to see that we did not go without heat and were completely satisfied. I highly recommend this company!

Had a new house built. Everything they did in the bathrooms was terrible. Toilets rock back and forth, showers make noise crackling noises when in use. No seal on the faucet. Also, hot water heater vibrates entire house when on.
I have been wanting a Mini split AC for my den for a while. Jacob and one other guy from Smith&Keene came to do the job, he explain to me what they were going to do. I thought it was going to be a whole lot of noise going on they worked peacefully I thought it might take forever to get it done I was surprised. I am satisfied with the great job they did.

We needed a new HVAC system as our condo's original 16-year old unit was leaking freon (which is no longer available). On the recommendation of my neighbors, I called Smith & Keene. They promptly sent a repairman to patch us up until an estimator could arrive. Thanks to S&K, we now have a new unit, installed on time and on target, albeit we did not have a replacement budgeted, the price was reasonable. Highly recommend Smith & Keene, especially for their professionalism.
Customer Service is horrendous. I had a 4:00 appointment with Smith & Keene to come out and service my unit. The service technician called me and left a message, at 1:30 that he is running early and is on the way. Needless to say I didn’t get the message until 4:00 once I got off work. When I called the office, the lady answering the phone was smug and acted like it was my fault I missed the techs call. When she matter-of-fact asked if I wanted another appointment for the next week, I told her I was going to use a company that will appreciate my business.

Was sold over the phone about how good the customer service was supposed to be. I pre-scheduled service for air conditioners. and took time off from work to accommodate the appointment at 1130 AM. I received a call about 1 PM to saying the technician wouldn't be there until 3 PM. At 400 PM I called asking where the technician was. At this point he supposed to show up somewhere around 430-445 PM
I understand that this is not the fault of the scheduler or the technician. It is the company that is overbooking their workforce because they're greedy. Air conditioners break in the summer and furnaces/heat pumps break in the winter. The work load shouldn't be a surprise to these people but they always blame it on they've been so busy because of the weather. Catch a clue people - hire enough staff to handle the workload.
At this point I've now wasted 4 1/2 hours off from work for nothing. Unless this technician is amazing I'll never use this company again.

We recently had two Min-split units on our second floor installed by Smith and Keene and i have to say it was a Ten Star rated service and installation.
Starting with the salesman Chris Outten who not only provided a very competitive price but lent us a window AC unit to use in one of our bedrooms while we were waiting for the units to ordered come in. The Heat indexes that week in July were averaging around 110 degrees.
The installation was provided by Alex and Grant two young men that have restored our faith in the Millennial generation. They were always on time, respectful, courteous, hardly ever took a break, neat, cleaned up after the job, and performed a complicated installation and completed it with in the time frame they quoted and made sure all the units were working properly before they left.
We also had a new electric panel installed as part of the installation. This was performed by their electricians Sam and Tyler. Again they arrived on time, were courteous, completed the installation within the time quoted, cleaned up after the job was complete, and made sure all the electricity was working before they left.
My Wife and I thought this was the best service and installation we have ever experienced and we have experienced many over the years. We would highly recommend Smith and Keene to anyone looking for HVAC services.

Smith and Keene installed the heating system in the home we bought. Our upstairs heat went out last week and we called to have them inspect it. The technician came for a total of 15 minutes said he couldn't find the problem and it had restarted. What he wrote on the ticket was that he thawed the pipes....LOL not sure how you do that in 15 minutes and didn't see a big ole hairdryer there to thaw anything out. Charged us 100 dollars. 2 days later the heat went out again. When I called I was told that we will be charged 100 dollars again because it is probably a frozen pipe. Right, charged again for a service that wasn't done in the first place. I will take my business elsewhere. Bad company Bad service
Six months ago I contracted with S&K to replace a heat pump in a rental property. The location of the air handler was overhead and exceedingly tight, making the installation exceptionally difficult. Nevertheless, the S&K technicians performed marvelously, overcoming several obstacles not only efficiently, but also with good attitudes.
Most recently, the company replaced a worn out humidifier in my home. They provided an upgrade from what I had paid for. Several days after its installation, I had a few questions about the system. The company responded quickly by sending out another technician, who explained in detail how it worked and verified that all was in order.
Smith and Keane provides high quality product and work at a very fair, competitive price. Their technicians' military punctuality was frosting on the cake.

WELCOME TO THE THIRD WORLD' - Within the last six months, Smith & Keene has replaced a thermostat ($400+), condensing and evaporator coil ($5,000 installed including labor), and motor ($860) in our HVAC system. The basically new system failed about three weeks ago. We have had multiple visits by Smith & Keene technicians but to date, none have been able to fix the problem. We have now been without air conditioning for almost three weeks and temperatures inside our home are between 85-90F during the day. In our last phone call to Smith & Keene, it was suggested that because our basement unit was working, we could live down there until new parts were ordered and they could schedule another visit. Stay as far away as you can from this incompetent and overpriced company! They have made too much money in their 74 years to care about the individual customer anymore.
Just to close the loop on this one, Smith & Keene called back to say that the defective compressor motor was under warranty but that it would take three weeks for delivery and there would be an additional $40 installation labor charge. After $6,000 and three weeks with no A/C, we were not going to wait indoors at 85F another three weeks! It was Rogers Mechanical based in Lanexa, VA which responded with the earliest availability to help us. Within an hour of our phone call, Aaron Rogers was at our home and had diagnosed the problem. Three hours later, he had located a compressor replacement and by evening, our house was back to the low-mid 70F degrees. We can't thank enough Aaron and his wife who coordinated over the phone to get this emergency repair done so quickly!
My review is based on my experience with their Newport News location (since that locations doesn't allow for google reviews).
I recommend NOT calling Smith & Keene for your after hour HVAC needs. This morning Mr Larry Rush of Smith & Keene explained, or attempted to explain, how $303 for an after hour (Saturday) freon recharge (1lbs R22) was a fair and competitive price. We paid Smith & Keene $149 for the after hrs service call and $154 for the R22 freon recharge. Mr Larry ended the call abruptly (rudely) after he ran out of explanations. I called a few competitors for estimates on the same service. You live and you learn. Here's what I learned:
For the same after hrs service:
Wright's AC (Wolftrap): $88 (after hrs) + $50 (R22) = $138
Dan's AC (near Jefferson/Eustis Blvd): $95 (after hrs) + $50 (R22) = $145
RS Andrews: $89 + $144 ($79 for 2nd lbs) = $233
It's funny Mr Larry told me to call RS Andrews. So, I did.
I was really pleased with the services of Smith and Keene. I saw an ad on TV for a special they had on their Ductless AC Mini Split systems and called for a quote. They were at my house on my scheduled time for a quote. It was a pretty simple install in a Sunroom on my house. They scheduled the work to be completed within a decent time frame and kept me informed throughout the whole process from when I received my quote until the work was complete. I was happy with their work and their professional courtesies. Needless to say, my Sunroom is very comfortable now. The AC system works as designed and I feel confident in calling on this company for support and future needs.
S&K Just replaced my entire HVAC -- their staff were very friendly and knowledgeable -- and the installer even figured out how to fit the furnace into my attic without moving everything around, saving me money while saving their team time! Their prices are not the lowest in the area, but they are not the highest, and all of the charges were well thought out and explained. Would definitely use them again.

Lennox Wi-Fi tstat bad b4 6 year mark. Have annual contract with them. Called in emergency for no heat in middle of the night with no call back until normal operating hours. Tech came out late PM said he didn’t have that tstat and I’d have to order - he literally was going to leave me w/o heat, until I said he wasn’t leaving until I had heat! Rewire to a manual t/stat. He did. I have heat. But he gave me a very old model of Honeywell that cost $80 new but charged $200 then didn’t even give me programmable capabilities! I will be buying a new Lennox S30 but Smith&Keene will absolutely not be getting the business!!

After losing power a few times since we bought our home, we decided to invest in a whole-home back-up generator.
We got a few quotes and didn't go with the lowest one but with the company we thought will give us the best service and support.
Little that we know, we made the wrong decision.
8 months and $13,500 later we got back home last night, around 9 pm, from a trip only to find out we had no power in the house.
The generator Smith and Keene installed didn't start automatically as we were promised.

We have been without AC for 3 weeks. The first guy who came out was there 5 minutes and blamed it on something in the attic. They finally came back after a week of HEAT and the new guy said it was a capacitor. He told us we would have to wait to cool off the house cause it had been so hot. We waited and it never got cold. The unit is 10 years old so we called and said just put a entirely new unit in. They again told us it would be another 4 days for someone to talk to us. $1200 to still be miserable is not great service in my opinion. They could have left a portable unit as I know other companies do. I’m guessing their houses are cold so they could care less.
Very pleased with the zone HVAC that was installed to include the discovery of a large gap in my existing ductwork that was allowing air to escape. They were determined to ensure that my satisfaction was paramount.
Have used Smith and Keene for the past 10 years. They have been excellent with their services... Rate 5 stars.

Their work is great good luck in setting appointments even when you join the yearly maintenance. Close follow up on the customers part is required or you may never see them. Basically the only issue I have seen originates with scheduling which is an office problem and the ‘ sorry about that’ attitude that pours fuel on the frustration.

We have a week old home that Smith & Keene did the plumbing and HVAC. Today our pipes are backing up and and overflowing our downstairs bath. Call, get forwarded to their after hours number and no one answers and their mailbox is full. Already not a happy customer and have not even made contact yet. A week old home SHOULD NOT have pluming issues.

We had Smith & Keene install a whole house generator in our home recently and are very happy with the results. The install was smooth, they went over all the details with us and made sure all our questions were answered. We would recommend them gladly to anyone wanting to add a whole house generator to their home.
Great experience. Sales guy Todd was informative and made the the process smooth. Instal crew made quick work of the instal of the new system with no lack in workmanship.
Technicians installed new instant hot water system, which included the new instant hot water system and an upgrade to natural gas service including a new trunk from meter to unit. Staff was knowledgeable and professional to the point they identified a plumbing issue which was not part of the instation and with out their efforts to identify, I would not have known about a plumbing leak at my washer until it had gotten much worse. I would use them again for any heating or electrical repair or installation.

I purchased Smith & Keene's service agreement plan a few months ago and had them come out last week and do inspection on system and everything checked out good. Today I was walking underneath a vent and noticed hot air blowing from it and i discovered outside unit not on. i contacted Smith & Keene and was told that since i have air conditioning upstairs it is not an emergency and someone might be able to come on Monday. I understand if someone could not come out today but would at least expect service within 24 hour period.

Like the service hate the price
Had two HVAC units replaced, and was very satisfied with the entire experience. Ours sales representative was very knowledgeable and helped us select the perfect product - no up-selling, no fluff. The installation had some hitches (this was a very active job site, lots of moving pieces), but every time we had a question or concern the crew worked on it until we were more than satisfied. Everyone was very easy to get a hold of, responsive to calls, etc. Bottom line - we felt like we got a good deal on exactly what we wanted, and the team went above and beyond to make sure we were completely satisfied with our new units. I would happily recommend Smith and Keene to anyone looking for HVAC work, and will call them again for all my future HVAC needs.

When I called for a leak in my condensation pipe Smith and Keene told me they could NOT send someone out until Monday. BUT, if I want to have someone come out tomorrow (Saturday) they could. However, they would charge me an extra $125.00. Now, I have been paying for this service for years and have never called with a problem. So, for all that they promise the one time I call they want me to hold on for three days and on the fourth they will send someone to deal with my problem. Take what you want from this review, I'm not a happy camper.

Requested estimate on installation of Ductless HVAC system from Smith & Keene and two competitors. I expected S &K to be highest because they were most established company. I was pleasantly surprised by knowledge and concern for ours needs. They pointed out things I had not considered and in the end they were the lowest quote. The installation was done on time and completed with respect for our requests. Smith & Keene exceeded our expectations every step of the way.

Today, they had their Lead plumber come by and correct all of the issues that were previously done incorrectly. DO NOT USE SMITH & KEENE FOR YOUR PLUMBING NEEDS! Although I had a 5-star experience with the HVAC department, their Plumbing department is an absolute joke! They only have 2 Plumbers on staff yet spend money to advertise they do plumbing & electrical. Filthy and incompetent plumber seemed clueless. He had to immediately come back because lines were not installed correctly and water was leaking all over the cabinet under the sink and caused water damage to the cabinet. Also, cracked the quartz countertop when removing the old handle. They cannot even install a faucet properly …it’s loose, wobbles and is causing more water to leak under sink. His solution was to caulk it which did absolutely nothing and looks half-a$$. Claimed the bolt seized up and couldn’t tighten anymore. But my hardware friends said there are 100 ways to unseize a bolt. Waiting on a call for them to get back out here and install it RIGHT! Don’t get me started on the filth and mess that was left in each room where work was being done. I spent an hour cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, washing towels and scrubbing grease stains off the walls after this clown left. I’ve never in my life had a repairman leave a worksite as filthy as this! Do not waste your time or money using Smith & Keene for plumbing!!!

We've had a plumbing problem with our kitchen sink for a number of years. I've had a couple of different plumbers look at the water pressure only to be told, can't do anything. I called Smith and Keene, and Herb immediately checked all of the plumbing and found the problems. Everything works better than ever, I would absolutely recommend Smith and Keene.

We delay reviews on major projects just to be sure. In October 2020, Smith and Keene installed a 22Kw whole house generator. Their coordination, planning, installation, restoration of the work area, follow-up on information I forgot, and positive, constructive employees were terrific.
From the salesperson (Tony) , the Sup(Larry), and the crew( Alex, Josh, Mike) Nothing but professionalism, technical knowledge from the crew was off the chart impressive. Mr. Larry even fixed my shotgun. These guys worked through rain and good ole fashion Virginia humidity without a hiccup. All work was completed correctly with zero rework and ahead of schedule. The office staff bent over backwards to make this job happen according to my time schedule. They have my business from here out.
Great work and very patient sales. They worked with us and we now have a completely new HVAC system. They slated us for two days but crushed it in just one day. Great work.

These guys did a great job! Got me the system I wanted after all the research I did and even made sure my duct system was correct for the system I wanted. They were even quick to get someone out on a weekend to fix an issue that can up to make sure everything was good a few days later. I will be calling them back for my yearly maintenance and would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a new system. My energy bills are already dropping. Thanks guys!!
Patrick and his team did a terrific job! They were professional and responded to every question we had. The team also did a great job of cleaning up after each phase of installation of our whole house generator. Even the inspector referenced the quality of the installation.

We have a service agreement for Smith and Keene to inspect the HVAC units at our house twice a year. The company has postponed the scheduled system inspection three times already because they said they need to concentrate on repairs and new installations only, and can't do the maintenance inspections although they have been paid for. One of our units is making an unusual noise. When I called in, they said it would cost $79 to come out to diagnose the issue. Some how this does not seem right. If they were to inspect the units as per the service agreement instead of postponing it three times, they may have detected this potential issue. It is very frustrating!!

Smith & Keene provided professional and courteous service from the salesman to the person answering the phone to the scheduler to the service techs, Jonathan Booth and Alex G. They worked diligently, answered any questions I had, and cleaned up afterwards. I had high expectations and they met them. I absolutely recommend this company if you're having your HVAC system replaced.
While the sales representative and the initial service call by a technician were good, the workmanship associated with the installation of a new air handler in our condo in Norfolk was shoddy and slapdash. Couple this with their total non-responsiveness to phone calls and a contact us through their website and you have a most unacceptable experience. We spent $11,822 for workmanship that is totally unsatisfactory. Providing good customer service is something they have yet fully learn and appreciate. Hopefully this review will finally get someone from this company to contact me. Right now, my advice is to take your business anywhere else rather than this company

Great service technicians, I've had my system for over 8 years, they service it twice a year, and are kind and patient as I tag along to learn. I could name many of the technicians that have visited the house, they have been with the company a long time which says a lot, each brings a unique set of skills, some with commercial backgrounds, some experts on new air filter technology available, and some who know the advanced thermostat functions without having to call for tech support. I am accommodated when I request a certain technician, but if he's not available, I know that whoever comes out will do things right. Great company and people from the ladies who answer the phone and schedule the service, to the guys who service and repair, they are great representatives of a fine company!

I had heard about Smith and Keene in the past . I heard they were quite good . I called them and
contracted services with them based on that . During each phase of it I was greeted with an extreme amount of professionalism from the first contact throughout the processes until the completion of all services . All of the associates were very kind and showed due diligence toward making sure that my experience with them was achieved . They genuinely wanted to establish and keep me listed as one of their customers . They were prompt and to the point . They communicated to me all details concerning payment plans , the type of equipment they offered and as to what I could choose from in which wasn't overkill or undercut in any form . What I really admired about this organization is that from my initial contact to them , in three days my order had been completed . They installed a new air conditioner with all new accessories , a new furnace in which had to be placed in the attic and a matching up to date digital thermostat . The installers were business like , quiet and concentrated on what they were on the property to accomplish . They were done in four hours . Unbelievable ! I am completely satisfied with my experience with Smith and Keene . They offer other home services and should I need work in those areas , I will not hesitate to give them a call .
Contracted with Smith & Keene to install a whole house back-up generator, a whole house surge suppressor, and to update the electrical service and meter to 200 amp.
The sales representative I will say was acceptable. I'm a general contractor, and I could tell he really did not have much experience. I caught several errors in the contract and he had to be reminded to add things to the contract that I asked for.
The preparation to complete the job before the install date went well. The install crew had everything that was needed. Rick is an excellent electrician and it showed from the very beginning. He went to great lengths to do the job right and did not take shortcuts that most people would not notice. All his wiring was very neat and well organized, which shows he takes pride in his work.
The gas installer and the two other assistants were excellent as well. Each day the crew cleaned up the site and left the site looking great when the entire job was done.
I would definitely recommend Smith & Keene.

My family and I have used Smith & Keene for several services over the years. They were quick to respond and replace a broken water heater in my father's Smithfield home; and I've used them for HVAC maintenance, whole home generator installation and gas fire logs install in my Norfolk home. We recently purchased a beach house in OBX that had electric heat and window units for AC. Last May, I contacted a couple local businesses down there about adding minisplits for cooling or updating the current system to heat and AC (the house has duct work in place already). The price quotes I got were OUTRAGEOUS, so we decided to stick with window units. Then a couple months ago, I learned that Smith & Keene services the Outer Banks, so I was thrilled! They set up a consult for a day I could meet them down there. We discussed the possible options/prices and decided that adding a new coil to our existing system and a new AC unit outside would be the most efficient solution. They worked with me to set up an install date between renters, so I didn't have to inconvenience anyone who already had plans to stay at our house... and before I knew it, we had CENTRAL AIR! It was a very exciting day!!! The installers were awesome! They put down floor protection and left the house as clean as it was before they arrived. We're not in a flood zone, but to be safe, I asked them to build a stand for the outdoor unit as well. Everything looks great... and works even better! We've already had a few warm days, and the new AC system makes the house nice and icy how I like it! AND they charged less than 1/2 of the other quotes I got. I'm super happy and super impressed with S&K as usual. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

I had Smith & Keene install my whole house Generac generator. From Larry Miller who took my order and came to look at the situation to Ricky Phelps and his man, sorry I can't remember his name, to Erin in the office it was one of the most pleasurable installation experiences I've had. Installing a whole house generator is not an easy job and it is very complicated from the electrical to the gas. I read many reviews of other companies that were nightmares so you wonder what you are getting. Trust me, you don't have to worry with Smith & Keene! The speed, efficiency, thouroughness, professionalism, and courteousness, it could not have gone any better! I highly recomend them and will look to them in the future for other needs I may have they do. I'd give em a 10 if I could but 5 is the top! And they are the A-Team! You can rest easy you are in good hands with Smith & Keene!

Technician came out last Thursday check unit and said it had a leak and was low on Freon . He cut unit off so that that line would unfreeze. Got wrong part number for fan That is understandable , but what is not is to tell me you would be there at 5pm and not show until 5:40pm leaving a note . I left at 5 :30pm So I call on Monday to reschedule the young lady was not professional at all she told me they couldn't come until Thursday evening I ask could they call on Wednesday to give me a more accurate time she said no ,I ask could they call on Thursday to give a time she said no I said you expect me wait all day until someone call her words were yes .WOW!!! I ask to speak to a supervisor she put me through to the voice mail never got a call back thx nothing
Do not do business with this contractor. I have the signature service plan and it is not being honored. Therefore, I terminated my business with them. Totally unprofessional!!!

Negative stars approach infinity! There is not enough space on the internet to list the problems I have had with a top of the line Trane air conditioner they installed in my home five years ago. They are here for repairs not less than a half dozen times a year and it has never cooled my house. Thank goodness I bought the ten year Maintenance Agreement. When the warranty expires, I won't call them to install filters!!! Once again, the system is broken and over the hottest week of the year, I sit without air conditioning because they do not have the parts and couldn't order them because it was a three day weekend!!! THE ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE OF ANY HOME IMPROVEMENT I HAVE HAD DONE TO ANY HOME IN MY LIFE, COLLECTIVELY!
The tech was great, knowledgeable would recommend any time a company should be happy having an employee of his caliber.

Very smooth transaction from an engineering estimate to the installation.
We are very pleased with Smith & Keene maintaining our HVAC. We have the annual service agreement and a technician visits twice a year to check our systems. Their techs (Dennis in particular) are courteous and knowledgeable.

They sent a repair tech for my mini split thats only 2 years old. Tech said its low on freon.He said I can fill it with freon or I can inject dye in it for about $350.00 and depending on what I find leaking could run up to $1000.00. Why cant he just use a freon sniffer and fine the leak? Millers is right (they sent a selling tech out not a true repairman)I dont blame the tech. I guess he was taught that from the company.Wont make that mistake again.

I have been a customer for 20 years and have generally received good service from tech and install team. They are getting a 3 instead of a 5 due to response time. Don't think because you make an appointment way in advance you will get taken care of in a timely manner.
I made an appointment about 3 weeks to a month ago for my heat service and somehow ended up at the bottom of the list. Here it is almost 6pm and I am still waiting for my service tech. They start at 8am and so I have now been waiting 10 hours for them. The Tech called an hour ago and said he was on his way and still waiting.
They need to find a better system to serve customers, if you need to hire please hire. And please help me understand why I make appointment almost a month ago and end up at the bottom of the list for service.

Smith and Keene gave us the best deal on our 2 ton heat pump replacement. Right from the office staff who confirmed the advertised offer, to the sales staff who came out to look at our existing system on its last legs, without trying to upsell to us. The installers, Jonathan and Casey arrived on time and worked efficiently to take out the old system and replace it with the band new Lennox heat pump with matching air handler. They laid down tarp to keep our floors clean and cleaned up after themselves. We are quite happy with the whole process. We hope the system will give us many years of service.
From start to finish, I was kept fully informed of what was going on. Technicians were on time and very courteous. They were very meticulous and attentive to the details. My few questions were answered thoroughly. Excellent value. Very happy to have my generator installed.
You absolutely can’t find a better price for the Mitsubishi mini-split, not even close. Professional sales and installation. Some delays to install but only because they wanted to make sure to get it just where I wanted it. Mini-split is quieter than advertised. Highly recommend.

Great service team. We have their annual servicing contract. They are always punctual, courteous, and highly efficient. We recommend them highly.
Also, we took advantage of their special water heater replacement recently as ours was nearing ten years old. In fact, we have noticed in our condominium project numerous water heater replacements of late due to failure and the inconvenience of that problem versus pro-active replacement through the Smith and Keene special offer.

Had to replace my Carrier gas package unit with a Lennox from Smith and Keene. Quick response time on the estimate, competitively priced. Jonathan Mulder and Brian performed the service. Multiple technicians came, diagnosed with no permanent results. The good folks at Smith & Keene came by, inspected, found the problem and fixed it! The installers that came out were of a level of professionalism and sheer passion I have never seen. The pride and consideration displaced floored me. And to top it off, a couple of days after the installation, a Smith & Keene rep called to ensure I was satisfied. There is no confusion as to why Smith & Keene are the best in the area! A company that will nickel and dime you with diagnostic fees and additional labor fees. Had them install a new unit 2 years ago (2018) and the install went relatively well except for the dirt throughout my house. I understand needing to pay your employees but $120 for 20 min worth of work is ridiculous.

I have used Smith and Keene for my air conditioning and heating needs for about 31 years. Installed 2 different systems in 2 different houses here in Norfolk. Just had our annual Heating checkup. Chuck, our technician, was on time, professional and friendly. Jonathan Mulder and his associate Landon provided excellent and professional service to my mother's home on May 30. They arrived 15 mins early before the start time of her actual appointment time to set up . They even maintained a superior level of professionalism when they embarked on a difficult task during the installation of my mother's Lennox unit. After the job was done they clean up the all of the area that they worked in as well as stayed for additional time to ensure that the unit was working in tip top shape. Kudos and thank you Smith and Keene you have gained a customer for life.

Very pleasant and professional employees. They did an outstanding job and the price was great. They also replaced a hot water heater. I would definitely recommend this company.
