We recently completed a full tear-out kitchen and master bath replacement with Homework Remodels in our mid-century home (built 1957). It was the second major project on which we engaged Steve Shinn and company. The first was about ten years ago for an addition to our home that added an office/bedroom, laundry room, garage extension, new roof, painting and changes to front and rear patios.

Doing such an extensive project that involved all trades gave us the opportunity to really get to know Steve, the quality of work from his team, and the way he runs his business. Needless to say, we were very satisfied and had no hesitation calling Homework Remodels for this latest project.

We were very pleased to see that Steve was not only still in business following the recession that clobbered so many local companies, but actually had grown his business over that time. Knowing that Steve takes a long-term approach to managing his business, and having seen his dedication to customer satisfaction, we were not surprised to see that Homework Remodels flourished. We had uncertainties about other contracting firms, so we went with the one we knew and with whom we already had a good experience. We had confidence in Homework Remodels, so it was a pretty easy decision.

One of the changes we found, that was of great value to us, is that Steve now had an in-house designer, Sheila, whose experience and expertise was obvious from our first meeting. It made tackling such a large project a much more comfortable experience. Sheila provided a lot of information on materials, fixtures, and design, and told us where to find more on our own.

The Homework team provided guidance every step of the way and did a great job. I would recommend them for their quality of work and great customer service.

The Matthew’s Family, Garth, Rhonda, Faith and Staff are wonderful to work with, going to great lengths to make sure we were satisfied. Refacing is a real cost saver for kitchen remodeling our biggest concern was quality of the product and follow through by the contractor. The Matthew’s took care of that concern. The quality of the product we selected is great and the install, with exception of a few necessary corrections was seamless. All said and done KTU left us with beautiful new kitchen and Baths. We recommend this the concept and Kitchen Tune Up to anyone looking to update their kitchen and baths.

I'm not sure how many stars to give. Most of this experience deserves zero stars. Although, there are a couple people and situations that deserve 4 or 5.

We ordered 3 closets on Jan 31, 2022, a master bedroom walk-in, a sewing room closet, and a small kitchen pantry. Our designer Jessica (5 stars), who is no longer with the company, was great as were her designs. The install was scheduled for June 13 & 14 2022. We did all the demo and repainted all 3 areas in preparation. An installer, who is no longer with the company (zero stars), showed up at 1:00 pm, did about 70% of the walk-in, and left for the day at 4:00. He came back at 10 am the next morning and finished the walk-in except for 3 drawers that hadn't shown up. We were told they'd shipped on June 9th. He then installed 40-50% of the sewing room closet. There were 7 pullout shelves that weren't installed because they weren't loaded in the van. Then he was going to start on the pantry. At 2:45 pm he told us that nothing in the van was for our pantry so he was leaving. I asked when he was coming back to finish and he said he didn't know. He gave me the direct phone # for the installation manager, Glen (zero stars). I immediately called and left a voicemail.

Over the next 6 business days I called Glen at least once a day and left a voicemail. He didn't return any of my calls. I also called the office everyday. I was always told that Glen was away from his desk and they'd have him call. Never happened. On Friday June 17, the office staff told me that they would have a new employee, James (zero stars), call me that day, or the following Monday. Also didn't happen. So that night I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Glen called the following morning and we scheduled an installation for the following week. According to Glen, the date was “written in stone”. No one showed up. After a couple tries, I again spoke with Glen. We rescheduled for the following week. No one showed up. The next day I had him give me his supervisors name and email, which turned out to be the owner, Gil Santos.(3-4 stars). I emailed him and explained the situation. By this time it's June 30th. We've been without a kitchen pantry, with no other way to store food in our kitchen, for over 2 weeks. Gil called me the next day and said he would investigate and get back to me.

From this point on things improved. A new installation manager, Paul (3-4 stars) was hired. His communication could be better. I think he inherited a mess from Glen, who was terminated, so maybe it will improve once he gets things under control. There were a couple of issues with equipment and lack of workers, so our installation continued to be delayed. After a couple weeks Dan (4 stars) came out and finished the installation of the sewing room closet and completed the master walk-in except for one drawer. Finally on July 25th Sean G. (5 stars) came and installed the last drawer and installed the pantry. The owner, Gil Santos, stepped up and reimbursed us for a portion of our order. It was definitely the right thing to do. Overall, it wasn't a good experience. I would have a hard time recommending CBD. I hope they get it together because we like the product.
