Our water heater wasn't producing hot water. We called Diamond Heating/AirTemp Alaska, and they sent a tech out. He diagnosed the issue and then told my wife, who was there to meet him, that if it were him, he would just buy a new water heater. My wife commented that the water heater was newer, installed fewer than six years ago just before we purchased our home. The tech challenged her on that assumption, saying that the water heater could be the original water heater from 1996 and we were lied to during the sale. Finding it hard to believe that the tech couldn't distinguish between a three-decade old water heater and a six-year old water heater, my wife looked up the serial number online. The water heater is, in fact, six years old. In fact, it was still under warranty. So my wife asked the tech for a quote to simply repair the water heater, and he obliged. His estimate was just over a thousand dollars.The next day, I learned that a coworker's husband is a reputable plumber. He came by and diagnosed the problem. He found the same issue as the Diamond Heating/AirTemp Alaska tech. However, his opinion was that there was no need to buy a new water heater. He suggested that we replace a part and had the problem fixed within two hours for less than $250.Who can say whether this was an isolated experience or a routine business practice? I just know that we'll send our business elsewhere in the future.
