I had a roof leak that damaged my ceiling. Gelber's J Painting was very quick to respond and come provide a quote. They are a very good value with very fair pricing and excellent quality. Great experience throughout the whole process, with better than expected result! From the owner Gelber, and his whole team, they were all very easy to work with. Because we were trying to get the house ready on the market fast, they fit us into their busy schedule AND the unpredictable weather. They fixed and painted the water damaged ceilings, replaced the rotten wooden frame outside the kitchen window, painted the entire exterior house and the the front and back door. I had Gelber come and give me a bid to smooth the stucco on my house and do the exterior painting. We agreed verbally on a price, then he emailed me a bid considerably higher than the verbal quote. I wrote it off as a miscommunication as there was a bit of a language barrier and agreed to the higher price. We waited 2 months for the start date. On the start day, he wanted a deposit to start the job which I was fine with even though it was a higher amount than we agreed for a start deposit. He then asked me to split the deposit into multiple checks instead of one which I thought was odd. Next he asked me to write the check to him personally and not his business. As a General Contractor myself that plays by the books and does everything legally, I requested a W-9. Come to find out, he was not insured. When I asked for a W-9, him and his whole crew packed up and left. He blocked my number and quit responding. Even with all the red flags (no license, no insurance, wanting multiple checks, not willing to sign anything) I was still willing to work something out. I think there may be some illegal activities going on with this business. I would think twice before hiring.
