I was not impressed. I took the day off to meet the plumber, they rescheduled the day of. Then when they did show the person that I first met left and sent in a replacement that didn't seem as knowledgeable. After explaining what I wanted I left and upon returning and inspecting his work I found a couple of things I didn't like. First there was some charring of a nearby electrical cable but not enough to short it out. I decided to live with that. Secondly there was evidently some miscommunication and he replaced the diverter and tub spout but didn't change the shower arm so the finish would match. I decided to call him back out. He came back out to replace it but bit into it with his pliers marring the finish. Two weeks later from someone who regularly uses this tub I hear The showerhead is leaking. I think I'll look elsewhere or do it myself next time I need plumbing work.

Had a backed up sewer main. Checked around at some of the chain places that handle these types of things. First of all they charged to come out regardless just to take a look. Second of all any estimates i found online were about 400% higher for the chain places rather than Poor Johns quote.
The staff was great and really friendly when i called. They gave me an estimate over the phone and amazingly after all was said and done the price matched the estimate. Let me re-iterate. The price matched the estimate. If you check on other reviews for other places you will find that this is not normal.
The staff showed up same day about 2 hours after calling. They called beforehand to make sure that it was a good time. They were clean cut, courteous, friendly and engaging. They described exactly what they were doing as they were doing it. They explained where my own attempts fell short without being condescending. They also gave me tips and advice about moving forward and dealing with the issue should it arise again.
I do not leave reviews very often, but made an exception for this. If i have any further plumbing needs i will contact them solely. They definitely earned a long term customer, not only by the competition being so awful, but also by being so excellent.

They called at the time they said they would to let me know they were on their way and exactly what time to expect them at the house. Shawn was very professional and courteous. He listened to me explain the problem, quickly found the source of the leak, and explained my options in detail without talking down to me. He then quickly fixed the problem. I was very happy with the service and plan to use this company again in the future.

Had a basement floor drain looked at to see if it leaked/needed repair. It was covered up, but I had a 2nd working drain, so wasn't sure I needed to do anything with this one. Jake was professional, courteous, & honest. Luann, the receptionist was just as courteous, professional, honest, & kind. Competitive, if not best, pricing locally in KC. I recommend them.

I highly recommend this company. I have been dealing with drain issues for years because another plumbing quoted me thousands of dollars to fix the problem while speaking to me like I was dumb. So, I put off fixing the issue because I didn't want to deal with another plumber. When I called for an appointment at Poor John';s, the lady who answered the phone was so helpful and nice. She told me exactly what to expect. Jake offered two solutions to my problem. One easy solution that was worth a try, and if that didn't work he would quote me for the bigger job. Within 15 minutes, a problem I have been dealing with for years was fixed. My house is old and the plumbing is out-dated, so I did ask him for the same quote the other plumbing company gave me years ago. It was 1/3 of what they quoted me. Professional, courteous, helpful, and not condescending. If you are hesitant to call, don't be. You can trust this company to not rip you off.

I have had Poor John's both do both large and small jobs; my experience has consistently been that they are prompt, courteous, have reasonable prices (frequently below those of the national firms) and do very high-quality work. They work with customers in ordering parts and supplies to get the best value. We need many more tradespeople like the folks at Poor John's in this area. Always glad to take business to local firms, I am thrilled to have found such a competent and trustworthy one. As a senior citizen who prefers to keep expenditures local when possible, I am certain Poor John's will receive all my plumbing business!
Update 6/6/22: Poor John's is 5-star again; got my drain running after a basement flood, got the water heater started again, and offered sound guidance for future steps. Prices remain reasonable even in a period where inflation is getting to us all. Highly recommend!

Highly recommended! We are very happy with our experience with Poor John's Plumbing (PJP). Our house is an Old Leawood single story with full basement, built 1955, still with original plumbing. Due to old galvanized pipeline deterioration with buildup of gunk, the H2O inflow over time had become slow/reduced throughout, to fully stopped in one shower line. PJP essentially rebuilt the water line(s) in the basement, replacing 84' of old pipe with 3/4 pex. PJP also replaced several interior old valves and shutoffs/supply stops as well as the outdoor garden hose hydrants. PJP also installed new plumbing for planned later installation of an apartment size upstairs washing machine in a walk-in closet between the master bedroom and bathroom.
After an initial visit to assess the problems and work up a bid, the same service technician (Rowdy) returned a few days later to complete the work over a 2-day period, with two additional technicians the second day to timely complete the job. The quality of the work is excellent, nothing unnecessary was done, and it's certainly a night and day difference in our water situation.
Local company true to how they promoted the business. They were on time, professional, good quality and knowledgeable. Definitely worth the time and money. I will be using this business again for other plumbing in my residence. Free estimate included with clear honest information.

Living in an older home comes with many challenges, including old plumbing. This company has always been very responsive for us. They are conscientious, thorough, and customer-focused. Erik is the best - he really know his stuff!

My whole experience from estimate phase to the finished product has been great. Jacob and Rowdy have been awesome to work with. Rowdy does quality work. He took his time and really made the plumbing work with the basement bathroom layout I was going for. The amount of work he did and in the time he did it was impressive. I was recommended to call and get a quote from Poor John's from two different friends. The staff are all very personable. I can't stand pushy sales people so Poor John's was a breath of fresh air. They came out to give me a quote and had some great suggestions for my project and really listened to my concerns. It made the whole process of my project much easier. They worked with me at every step of the project. 100% would recommend working with them.

We had the folks from Poor John's re-pipe our old (built in 1937) two-story home. This involved extensive work in the basement as well as the second floor. A fair amount of the kitchen ceiling had to be opened up too. Rowdy, our plumber, is a master with Pex Pipe and carefully went about his work. Each night, he cleaned up before leaving. When the job was done, he covered the holes in the kitchen ceiling so that bits of plaster would not fall into the food preparation area. And, most important there were no leaks afterward, and we have like-new water pressure on the second floor. We had this job bid several times, and Poor John's was the most reasonable. I can't recommend them highly enough.

I hired Poor John's Plumbing for a large job on my property that included digging up and exposing my water line from the curb to the meter in search of a leak that the water department had notified me of. Poor John's Plumbing was the fourth company I had come out to my home. I initially spoke with Jasmine on the phone and she was very helpful in taking down the detailed information I left her regarding the issue I was having. She scheduled someone right away to come out and upon their arrival I quickly felt at ease. They are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The quote they gave me was reasonable and the best offer I had out of each of the companies who visited my house. The work started in a reasonable amount of time as well and they finished this huge project in only two days. My water line ended up being over 7 feet deep with complicated utilities near it. I can't even tell you how hard they worked knowing that I needed to get this issue resolved as soon as possible. Despite doing even more work than what was originally expected, they still honored their original quote and even came in under the bid. These guys are amazing and I can't even tell you how grateful I am for all their work. It's nice to know that good, hard working, honest companies still exist! They saved me so much money, time, and stress. I appreciate all they did and I highly recommend Poor John's Plumbing.

As a small business, we go out of our way to support other small businesses. We were not disappointed with Poor John's Plumbing. At the time Jake worked on our plumbing last fall, everyone's concern was our main line had collapsed, which would have lead to repairs we would not have been able to afford. Fortunately, it was a clog far down the line and we were able to avoid a horrible situation.
We assumed our most recent call was a clog of the same type, but Jake noticed that it was a problem we could fix ourselves and did not charge for the visit. This is the kind of business ethic that builds a faithful customer base. Thank you Jake and Poor John's Plumbing!

Promptly on time, and while my basement stairs was too tight for their machine, they were very informative and did not even charge for a house call.
Hands down, Poor John’s Plumbing is the best service experience I’ve had. These guys are a great value. Far less expensive than the big service companies, and most importantly absolutely honest with no sales pitch for unnecessary work or warranties. Communication via text the night before and then they were there as expected. Jake went above and beyond to get us a write up on the condition of our line, helping immensely with closing on our house. This is definitely a professionally run plumbing company, apparent in everything from scheduling an appointment, to the knowledgeable technician, to the new equipment. I only wish I had heard of Poor John’s years earlier.

I called them to remove a pressure valve in my basement that failed (I had almost zero water pressure). I previously had the valve installed a year earlier by someone else, to resize my excess water pressure. The installer installed the valve between two shut off valves to make removel very easy.
I called ‘ Poor John’s plumbing ‘ to simply remove the valve, a very easy task. The person that came out several days later states had zero tools or ‘part’ and that he’d have to drive multiple 18 wheelers to job sites to carry all the parts and tools around with him.
They also told me that they needed to diagnose my plumbing issues and that maybe a pipe was clogged, becuSe there is no way the pressure valve was defective and that it may takes weeks for them to figure this problem out. I told them to remove the valve that was previously installed or leave. So they removed the valve (with fixed the issue) and charged me an outrageous fee for a very simple task.
They wanted to milk the simple job so I would pay them lots of money. I’m calling the cops if they ever come to my house for anything.

I've used Poor John's for three projects now over the past year or so:
1.) Troubleshooting the source of a bathroom water leak and applying the appropriate fix.
2.) Putting in new wax seal for a hard-to-get-to toilet.
3.) Replacing the drain pipe behind/under the wall of my kitchen sink.
Each time the service was superb, the plumber was honest, the scheduling process was a breeze, and the price seemed very reasonable.
Poor Johns will undoubtedly be my go-to plumber as long as I live in KC.

It is nice to find a good hard working, ethical company that will not take advantage of anyone. The quality is superior and the customer service is impeccable. My wife had AB May services for many years and they performed their jobs well, but in the last few years they became inconsistent, we became a dollar amount, their knowledge from one tech to another was inconsistent. They couldn’t arrive for emergencies until the next day, the service slowed down. My wife found Poor Johns Plumbing, though they don’t offer emergency service or 24 hours, they are absolutely amazing and very professional!
The owners show up on-site, they walk with us on the problems or projects we want done. The owners jump in with their other staff and stay until the job is done. You’ll always work with the owner first, no technician, no salesman.
You can’t beat that kind of service where the owner shows up, not a technician or salesman, an actual owner. Poor Johns pricing is right in the middle, so it’s not cheap and it’s not expensive, very fair pricing. Everyone is very professional, they care about the customer, they don’t treat you like a dollar figure.

Out of all the services we had to have come over to our home after moving, Poor John's Plumbing was the best experience. They were professional, had an open line of communication (Jasmine the receptionist was amazing) and they did high quality work (Erik was extremely nice and honest). Charging over $300 bucks for repairing a leaking pipe is to much

I am rating them one star pending the outcome of my current problem. They are apparently closed for the 5 days before Christmas without any emergency # contact. They augered my main drain 30 days ago. It is clogged again. The website says their work is guaranteed but what good is that if you can't reach them? I tried to contact them on 12/21 by phone. The answering machine says, We are booked up for today and will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and will reopen on 12/26. No emergency #, nothing. I don't have a choice but to call somebody else. We will see what they offer when I call them on the 26th. Surely they wouldn't have expected me to go with minimal use of water for the 4 days before and Christmas day when we have company expected. Should I expect to send the guests to the neighbors to use the bathroom and shower?

I am a contractor in Kansas City area and needed a plumber to remedy a problem that a client had been dealing with (and paying for) for months. I contacted a major Ready Rooter type company who stood me up. The nerve of them! UGH! Anyway, I contacted Poor Johns, as the water level continued to rise in my clients basement from a main line clog, and the lady who answered the phone went far beyond what I would have ever expected from a stranger. She made several phone calls as that I had a client that was out of state, and a third party making payment. She also called to arrange an appt. with the tenants of the residence, then called me back to apprise me of all the details. Within a few short hours Poor Johns had a capable and, seemingly, qualified young tech arrive to resolve the drain problem. Thank You so much for your 150% put into making ME look good to my clients! I will CERTAINLY be using your services in the future. ~Michael

I just loved everything about this company. I took the recommendation off of a Nextdoor referral and am so glad I did. They came out right away and gave me a free estimate and scheduled the follow up appointment, as soon as I was able to do it. Sean was the one that came out to do the work and he was very knowledgeable, repaired only what was needed and cleaned up everything nice and neat when he left. I would definitely recommend and would use them again myself.

My service call was answered in the most professional and knowledgeable manner possible. A master plumber always answers your call so you can discuss the issue you are experiencing before they even come out. The plumber arrived within the hour of me placing a service call and their price for the same work done by Roto-Rooter was more than $300 cheaper. All of their prices are flat rate and listed on the website. I was super pleased with my experience and highly recommend this company for any plumbing needs.

Poor John's Plumbing is wonderful to work with. We've worked with them over several years on nearly 100 properties. We highly recommend for their knowledge and expertise!
Extremely impressed....we had major issues with another corporate brand trying to charge us roughly $700 to snake a line that was 100 ft....we told them no way, called Poor John's and will never call anyone else again besides them.
They were quick to reply, quick to do the job, professional, friendly and incredibly reasonable as far as pricing.
If I were you, and you need a plumber, CALL Poor John's, for sure!

The PJP team provided to me excellent communication and scheduling efforts with respect to getting an assessment and estimate of my potential leak issue on an outside buried line. To their good credit, they focused on fairly assessing my problem instead of merely looking for a revenue opportunity and, preliminary made some recommendations for me to self-execute. Their common sense approach and fairness was refreshing and has put PJP at the top of my list for the next plumbing need.
It's been over a year since Poor John's replaced our main sewer line. They did it for about half the price. We're really happy with it!
Although the work was fine, the cost was high. The service person also made comments on a court decision that were offensive and spent time on his phone discussing the verdict with friends. I would not want this person to return to my home.

I called them up at ten, the service tech was out at 11:15. Anthony was really professional, and took care of our clogged drain. They quoted me a flat rate, and that was it.
I will definitely be calling Poor Johns again if I ever have issues in the future.

We had them out to replace our hot water heater with a tankless and couldn't recommend them enough! Everyone we spoke to and interacted with was so polite and professional, they explained everything to us prior and walked us through how to use the new one. They cleaned up everything perfectly, and did exactly what they said they would. Absolutely would recommend to anyone!

Had a minor issue with some exhaust fumes and they were able to squeeze in a quick inspection to make sure everything was safe. They provided quick and effective service and were wonderful to work with. We will definitely use them for all our plumbing needs going forward.
Very impressed! Responded quickly to my email inquiry, helped me make the correct choice of a replacement disposal which I purchased at Home Depot, provided me with a 1-2 hour appointment window, installer arrived right on time and was finished in one hour. Great service!

We have used Poor John’s plumbing multiple times over the last year. They have been easy to work with, reliable and reasonably priced. Hence the 5 stars.
My watch cold water inlet was leaking they sent out a young man that went to get the part told me that’s what it was show me where it was leaking which I already knew because I took pictures, and then came up and said whoops looks like we have to get you a new water heater which was like $1700 do not trust this company they will not give us their insurance information. I have contacted the attorney generals office think twice before you use them.

Poor John's, once a reputable and reliable small business, has within the last couple years grown into a business that places greed over principal. Jake allegedly cleared the mainline but neglected to check all drains to ensure they were draining properly before leaving the job site. Turns out that in the process of clearing the mainline, garbage backed up into the kitchen line. When I phoned Jake to let him know this, he said it is a separate problem that would cost another $89. And since he doesn't work Saturdays, it would have to wait until Monday. My renter ended up buying a snake and fixing the problem but Poor John's still billed me a sizable amount, some of which we had not discussed. I gave Terry a chance to make it right, but instead of making it right, she complained about this Google review, charged me significantly more than what we had initially discussed, and didn't deliver the services she had promised. Ironically, a five start review posted just days after I submitted mine....

Great service overall!
We had a kitchen sink drain that was leaking. Shawn came out, as scheduled and on time, and fixed it quickly. He was friendly, courteous, and very professional. Overall he did a great job. And the charge for the job was very reasonable. I highly recommend Poor John's Plumbling for all your plumbing needs. We intend to call them for any future plumbing problem we have.

I've used Poor John's Plumbing for many years. They go above and beyond in service! After being a long time customer I feel now more like part of the family. If you call and get a machine or if you are put off by having to wait for service a few extra days and are considering not using them, that would be a big mistake. They are great at their profession, super busy and will go out of their way to help you as much as they can. I've had them fix minor issues all the way up to a 1/2 bath install. They will repair what they can and replace what they can't. They are super sensitive to cost and will try to save you money when they can. In 11 years I've had one minor issue with them and they tripled their service to me. The owner came out before and after work to fix it and it was mostly my old plumbing's fault, my ignorance of plumbing issues and not their installer's fault. They are worth every dime don't pass them up.
We recently bought a new house and have had a number of plumbing issues. We found Poor John's on the internet and gave them a shot. We could not be more pleased with them...they were able to come out quick, free estimates, professional and friendly workers (met three of them with all of our issues), completed all tasks within budget, and cleaned up the mess. We bought an older house that has copper pipes so we had some challenging jobs. We had the guys install a kitchen sink with copper piping, fix old plumbing in our leaking shower/tub, and fix an obstruction we had in the piping between our washing machine and kitchen sink. If we ever have issues in the future, we will call Poor John's!
