They installed a new boiler and relocated a radiator. Price was very fair. Installation was smooth and clean. I have few complaints. (For example, it was hard at times to get them to schedule me in.) I plan on using them in the future.

I have an elderly mother staying with me. Arrived home to a chilly house. Realized the heat was not on. Called one guy who said he was charging close to $500 just to come out. We contacted Chapman Brothers and without hesitation, the technician came out, located the issue swiftly. The repair took all of 20 minutes and he was on his way. Price was very reasonable. Chapman came to my House quoted me a price for a fan motor replacement of $451 to $758 and also charged me a $69 service fee.

My family was in the Heating Business for 80 years in Manhattan and I could do the work myself. I looked up the part number on the interment and could buy one for $159 max myself. So I figure $400 to $500 is high but fair for the right job. Everyone is entitled to make an honest living.

It was literally a 4 bolt and job and should not take more than 1 hour to complete test and retest. But hings did not go as I anticipated.

They claim the part cost $210 and charged me $742 in total. Since Chapman spent less than 2 hours in my home. I think the cost and the horrendous attitude to my wife was unprofessional. Chapman used to be a good shop and I cannot recommend them any longer. I did not expect these games from them.

The business response below to my initial review was accurate. In fact, I was impressed with their willingness to come by on such short notice.

When I called at 3:30pm the receptionist was far from warm and seemed irritated with me calling to check in. She said they WILL CALL ME a half hour before they arrived -- which they never did.

Bill called me this morning to tell me he had stopped by and knocked/rang the doorbell. I was in the home the whole time and didn't hear anything, but I'll take him at his word and he seemed truly apologetic, even offering to come to the home this morning (unfortunately I had to take the time off from work yesterday and therefore couldn't today).

He said the company could not find where they put my phone number and that's why he never called. I believe him on this, too. I get that things happen but the attitudes I received from the different folks I spoke to there was icing on the cake for having lost a day of work. Melissa who I initially spoke with was great, though.

Initial review:

I would not recommend them at all. Completely unprofessional and they wasted my entire day.

I waited all day for them to arrive and even called when they were running late to be told I would receive a call 30 minutes before they arrived.

Four hours later I was finally able to get a hold of one of the technicians who told me the guy had been here hours before and that nobody was home — which is complete bs. I was in the living room by the door all day and they never called me once.

My sump pump stopped working on a day of a storm. Called and within 20 mins I had a call back from the plumber and he talked me through how to run the pump manually until they could replace it later that morning. Great job and a much more efficient pump was installed.

Great service at a fair price.

This was an emergency inside water leak during a severe storm. Chapman Plumbing was very responsive, determined the problem and repaired the leaking pipe helping to prevent severe flooding and home damage.

I did $40k of work with Chapman on the basis of Bill, the owner, telling me that they are loyal to the community and are focused on service. Over the past 4 years, the Chapman office staff have consistently given me the runaround and failed to service the major installations they have done in my home. They are happy to take an annual fee, but don’t schedule service, don’t follow up, have bad record keeping and you have to fight for any service you are lucky enough to get. The majority of the technitions are good and nice to work with, but I for one will be looking to move my business to a company that has a professional office staff, has follow through for maintenance and actually honor their service commitment. Such a major disappointment from a local business!

Juan came out in 45 minutes after we placed an urgent call to Chapman Bros that our AC wasn’t working after normal business hours on a Saturday evening. He quickly diagnosed the issue, explained it to me thoroughly, and made the appropriate part replacements smoothly to get our condenser unit working again without having us have to make a total condenser replacement. It was back working in a half hour. We’re so happy we found Chapman Bros in the area!

Thanks for all the help and quick response. I had my water heater blow at 7:00 on a Sunday night not the end of the world. By 7:30am Monday morning the team was scheduling with me and by 9:00 they were there to replace the tank. Took maybe 2:30 and had hot water before noon. More than one generation of my family have used Chapman Bros for at least 50 years. I’m always happy with the service, and everyone who works for the company is great. Fast service for emergencies (which in Cranford can mean flooding and related disasters) is always appreciated. I might have taken away a half-star for pricing...I’m sometimes a little surprised by how expensive a job turns out to be. But other than that, they remain my go-to service providers.

The faucet on our shower refused to shut off late on a Friday night. We contacted Chapman Brothers and their plumber came over immediately, was able to shut off the water and said he would check on Saturday morning whether the necessary part to repair the faucet was available (he also took a picture of the fixture). On Saturday morning he confirmed the part was available, contacted us, and came back to repair the faucet. He was very polite and very professional, and we will definitely use Chapman Brothers for all of our plumbing needs.

After multiple visits by heating companies, it was finally Chapman Bros. that fixed an issue that had been ongoing for TWO YEARS on a brand new steam boiler. From here on out, it's Chapman Bros. for my plumbing and heating work. When you earn my business by sheer competence, you keep it forever.

The connection between the sewer pipe and the sleeve was not done properly when the house was build, and this resulted a gap in between and water leaking to my basement.

The absolute worst
& their incompetence cost me thousands of dollars!

Long story short- they were hired for years to maintain my heating system that came with the home. Their guys showed up for 10 minutes each time then left. Maintenance takes alot longer than 10 Minutes. Had a major problem with the system since it was not appropriately taken care of. I Fired them as I discovered they were scamming me. Reported this to the owner who didn’t believe me and brushed me off.

I since Hired a reputable company to fix the problems their maintenance scam and they could not believe the state of my heating system. Due to their lack of maintenance while getting paid for it, my system basically needs to be replaced!!

Stay far away- beyond awful customer service as well!!

We reached out to chapman bros to come provide a quote for our sewer line as needed for our insurance company. With their glowing reviews we had planned to use them to repair our sewage line. However they came 3 weeks ago to inspect the line but never gave us the quote! We reached out to them at least a dozen times and NEVER heard back! Called, texted and emailed multiple times. Thank you for wasting our time!

I live in a 1920's Tudor home. It is really not made for air conditioning. The Chapman team did an incredible job fitting my house with a fantastic AC system to keep me cool all summer. It looks great from both the inside and outside. The crew was amazing, even through the challenges of my old house. I thank Chapman for their hard, and great, work and would recommend them to anyone looking for HVAC guidance.

The responding plumbers/technicians did not stop troubleshooting the error code we intermittently get with our Noritz tankless water heater until they were able to identify a probable solution. We also had them flush and do maintenance on our tankless water heater. This not only cleaned it thoroughly but also seemed to have addressed the hammering that arose after the initial 2 visits. The last servicing technician encouraged us to call them back if any of the problems recur. They came back a total of 3 visits to address our issues.

Called them to do work at my church. The receptionist was A1. Kind, respectful and attentive. The service i needed required a tech to come out on a sat. Due to its being an emergency. Im all too familiar with the “on call” techs who dont wanna work on the weekends and this tech was no different. He tried to diagnose my hvac over the phone and without ever setting foot on my property, he determined my issue called for an electrician rather than a heating/cooling technician. I would have gave them 1 star if it wasnt for the pleasant receptionist.

Had two different plumbers for two situations , Paulo and Anthony. They solved the problems and they left the bathroom spotless.

I have used Chapman Brothers for my plumbing needs for many years and I have always liked their professional service and staff. However, today I am annoyed at one thing that happen during a service call. Every year I have them out to either service my AC or furnace to make sure they are in proper working order. Before the service call I went to their web site and downloaded their $25.00 off coupon for any service. The technician did an excellent job in cleaning our my AC system and making sure the compressor, etc. was in good working order . However when it was time to pay the bill he called the office to determine if my coupon could be used. That is when he said that the coupon could not be used because this is not a service call it is a maintenance call. I don't know about other home owners but when I call a professional to come to my house to work on whatever in the house I consider that a service call. I think the Chapman Brothers coupon is very misleading as written and should be corrected so that other customers are not fooled by this word play

I tried to get Chapman to come out and do about ten grand worth of work, fixing the plumbing fiasco of the previous owners of my house.

The first tech to come out was on-time, respectful, super knowledgeable, but due to the size of what I wanted to get done, he had to call in Bill his supervisor. I was assured bill would be by mid-afternoon.

Bill never showed up, and I called to find out when he would come by. I was told he would be given the message, and it should be monday. I took off work to have people come out and fix the problem, but I can wait till monday I suppose.

It's now been three or four calls to the office, and multiple attempts to get Bill to show up at my house and give me an estimate, but he never showed up.

I went with another plumber, because 5+ weeks of not even getting a call back is absurd. They're very clear that to even get them to show up is an 89$ service fee, but since Bill never showed up to give me an estimate, and I was never charged, they're not getting a service fee from me.

The techs are great, I've never had an issue with any of the service professionals, but the office, and supervisory staff is a real let down. One star, find a reliable plumber through a family member or something.

John from Chapman came to descale my tankless water heater. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and overall extremely pleasant to deal with. He did what he needed to in an efficient amount of time. They were also half the price of the plumber that I had originally used to fix my system last year.

He chose a great shower valve replacement that changed the look of my shower completely. The price was right and reasonable and I know because I did my research. Heating died unexpectedly due to faked hvac fan. Chapman was at my door first thing in the morning. Replaced fan blower assembly and heating was up and running in an hour. Only complaint is $89 visit charge that should be credited towards work but I guess that is how every other plumbing company charges. Very happy with service

Our furnace went out. The pilot was still lit, but couldn’t figure out why the heater wasn’t working. Called Chapman brothers. They came early. Assess the problem and came back to complete all within a couple hours. Very professional. Highly recommend.

I am very happy with the service from Chapman Bros. They came quickly on a Wednesday morning to repair our furnace when we had no heat. And came back a few days later when some safety features of the furnace needed to be reset. Pricing was fair and they were very responsive when faced with a family with no heat.

Emergency sump pump replacement.

My AO Smith gas water heater finally went out (tank was leaking) after 10 years, so called Chapman Bros., and they were able to come out the same day for a quote and replacement. Nick and Juan showed up, they were quick, professional, and looked like they did their best to make sure that I was satisfied. After some research online and Chapman's confirmation, I went with a Bradford White as they're probably the best choice for gas water heaters.

Chapman Bros. came out to replace my boiler right after Hurricane Ida. Two day job to remove the old boiler and install a new one; Tom and crew were very professional, clean, and did a fantastic job. They were also priced very competitively.

I had some issues with the smart thermostats in the house afterwards that I couldn't resolve alone, and they sent out technicians several times with no charge. Very easy to work with and very fair, would 100% recommend!

Highly recommended! Bill came out and installed a gas line to our BBQ. At first, before seeing Bill I thought the gas line would be seen from the outside, but Bill was able to hide everything, and the results look great. He was very knowledgeable and made sure what we had was adequate for the BBQ. It was a great experience and I would hire again for any future jobs.

Top notch professionals. They installed a brand new central air unit and converted my house from electric heat to gas.

I talked to 14, yes, 14 different vendors, but decided with Tom and his team. They clearly explained everything they needed to do and did it right.

As far as communication, I called their answering service for an issue that was not related to the new system they installed. (I was worried about a vent I thought could fall and injure my 5 year old) The technician was in my house the next day and fixed it at no charge. That's how they work.

I had an emergency situation that I needed someone to come and immediately fix a busted pipe. Instead of asking what was potentially wrong, they more concerned about explaining their service fee to have someone even come out to my house. Call Roto Rooter or someone else, you'll be better off for it

We have always been happy with Chapman Brothers — they are very punctual and reliable!

Chapman Brothers have been a lifesaver for us. Our furnace gave out in peak summer and we knew we had time before we needed to install it for winter so we got quotes from a bunch of contractors. Chapman Brothers were not the cheapest but the knowledge and experience that Tom brought was second to none. As luck would have it, we ended up needing to do the installation much earlier because of an upcoming new arrival in the family. Tom and his team were amazing - drop cloths everywhere and tidied up the place after. A couple of days after installation, the new machine turned off. Quick text message to Tom and he turned up in less than 10 minutes to follow up. He dropped by on consecutive days, always messaging before just to check up and make sure everything was working. We've had a couple of technicians over since then for various items and they've all been on time, courteous and professional. They explain what the issue is clearly. We are so glad to have found these guys and they are on speed dial for any of our plumbing and heating issues! Thank you Tom and team!

On a Monday morning, two hours after my 6:45 AM emergency call for a clogged sanitary drain, the Chapman truck with Paulo and Mike arrived to resolve the problem. After a brief inspection, they brought in a motor-powered snake and ten minutes later the drain was clear. They cleaned the area, loaded their equipment and drove away at 9:30 AM after 45 minutes at the site. A wire disconnected from automatic feed on furnace made heat go out overnight!! Woke up to inside temperature of 44 degrees on a Saturday morning. Chapman Brothers had a repairman there within 25 minutes and within an hour repaired wire and updated my thermostat for very minimal cost. I was completely satisfied.

No matter the time or day of the week my calls are always answered promptly. All the technicians are professional, courteous and know what they are doing. Melissa the Office Manager is great at what she does, very pleasant to deal with and accommodating with scheduling needs. Just recently my kitchen faucet broke and even with the approaching 4th of July holiday weekend where most places were closed, Melissa found the time to locate a replacement faucet and have it installed (shoutout to the tech Nick) . I also find their prices to be fair and reasonable for the level of service. I highly recommend them.

Our home is almost 100 years old, which means we needed to hire the perfect company to add central air. Tom and his team at Chapman Bros. Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning were fantastic. They made multiple stops by our house to answer all of our questions and to show us exactly what they would do in our home, before we even hired them. So many other companies never called me back or stopped by and I never heard from them again. Chapman was there, did an excellent job and as a result we are extremely comfortable in our old home this very, hot summer!

When I first called, I was greeted by a friendly, helpful voice on the other line. We discussed the problem and I’d requested that someone come out either that day or the following morning (I had sitting water in my ceiling). She told me to expect a call from a technician later in the day to discuss further details. Unfortunately, I never got the call. I called again that evening and they were finally able to schedule something but not until two days later. Although I was a little annoyed that I never actually got to talk with a technician and they came later than I’d hoped, he did arrive on time on the scheduled day and fixed the problem in a short amount of time. So far everything is good!

Have a Rannai tankless water heater that wasn't heating the water. 2nd time this happened in a one year period, Reading error code 11. Unit is 12 years old. Looks new, and little buildup present from hard water/lime scale. John was very helpful and cleaned the ignition sensor heads and all good!

My contractor introduced us to Chapman Bros when we renovated our house. We've used them for all HVAC and plumbing matters since. Recently woke up without heat and learned our 40 year old boiler was leaking fluids. Someone arrived within a few hours and repaired it same day. Always can rely on them to wear masks, explain alternatives, and be willing to answer questions.

I had Chapman Bros. Replace a 4 inch cast iron pipe that cracked from the basement up to the first floor by using PVC pipe. It connected to 2 bath tubs, 2 toilets and 4 drains. The repair person was one of the elderly owners. He did an excellent job at a reasonable price. Not only do I recommend this plumbing company, I would definitely use them again.

The tech, Liam quotes the leak was behind the shower knobs, tile needed to be cut out and pipe needed to be repaired and shower handle valve needed to be replace and prior work to have 2 shut off valves installed to control water supply to the main bathroom. A Sr. Tech, Nick assessed and found the leak was coming from rotted tub spout, running into the wall and onto the floor. The fix was to replace rotted tub spout. They rebuilt the 3 handle shower valve that was rebuilt by another plumber in August 2021. I spent $823.15 for what should have been $256. I understand business needs to make a profit, I felt I was up sold on unnecessary work and for 2 techs to address the issue.

After reading my review, the owners of Chapman Bros. contacted me and gave me back a $256.00 check. I appreciated their follow up, addressed my concerns and gave me back some of the money to satisfy their customer.

I contacted Chapman Brothers when my furnace broke down the day after the January '16 snow storm. Tom, one of the owners, was at my door within an hour. He was able to get the furnace running temporarily and had one of his workers (with parts)at my home early the next morning. Both these guys knew exactly what they were doing. I have read some reviews claiming they are not the cheapest.. well... let me say this.. they changed the same part that I had changed 5 years ago by the company that serviced my unit semi annually... and Chapman Brothers price was LESS then I paid 5 years ago... GREAT service ... GREAT price.... GREAT experience... Thank you VERY much...

This is the first time I hired this company to do maintenance on our gas boiler. Juan arrived on time. He was very pleasant and patient with all of my annoying questions. He was neat and very organize, polite and very knowledgeable.
I will definitely hire them again. A fantastic company. Their receptionist Melissa explained their Comfort Service very well and too, was very pleasant.

Let us preface our review by saying we have an older home which had very specific needs and limited space to work with. It should also be noted that all of these projects needed to be precisely timed around a concurrent foundation repair (I-beams encased in concrete being placed along all of the walls in our basement).

Over this past year, Chapman Brothers completed dozens of repairs, including:
-conversion from oil to gas heat (steam oil boiler to gas combi unit - all in one boiler/water heater)
-oil tank/water heater removal
-steam pipe removal along all walls in the basement
-removal of steam pipes and conversion to pex water lines to all radiators throughout our home
-complete air conditioner/condenser replacement/associated electrical work
-sewer line replacement
-2 sump pump replacements (1 with complete battery back up system and pipe repair)
-lots of plumbing work
...and I probably forgot a thing or two...

Reliability, communication and punctuality were key to working alongside the foundation repair company, gas company, water company and town - all while allowing us to keep our sanity through such a big repair. The concurrent foundation repair made this a complicated and unique project to begin with, and our living in the home with a 1.5yr old while all this was going on just made it that much more interesting. For example, most of the plumbing needed to be temporarily installed before putting in the final piping, so we could live in our home while this all went on.

Chapman went out of their way to make this happen with no interruptions in gas/water/waste removal service. Also, ultimately all the plumbing/gas lines needed to be run around or over the i-beams placed along the walls-but neatly-so we didn’t waste too much space because we were refinishing the basement again. Some work needed to be slightly altered and redone after we hit some “bumps in the road” with our other repairs. Annoying but true, and without hesitation or complaint, Chapman redid the things we needed redone. We had a 1.5yr old running around and they worked around and humored him every chance they had.

Needless to say, there were a lot of factors that made our project anything but easy for anyone. But Bill, Tom and team did everything they could make all of this as easy as possible. They were thorough, organized, productive, clean, punctual, patient, reasonable, flexible, and most importantly honest and kind. Their attention to detail still impresses us. Who knew plumbing could be so clean and organized?!

The clever ways the guys found to work with what we had with was impressive / in-and-of itself. Further, these guys didn’t come in here trying to sell any fancy fixes or promise us the world. They came with obvious years of experience and, frankly, just helped us make everything work the best way it could for us and our specific situation. There’s something to be said about having a job done correctly, but it’s something totally different being able to say you had it done right the first time (Any homeowner who has had subpar work done knows exactly what I mean by this.). Bill and his team became a huge part of our lives over this past year and we respect them and their work more than we can say.

These guys had countless hours of work ahead of them yet never hesitated to stop and answer a question we had or offer a suggestion on a way to make our project work better and within our budget. They were punctual, used their time wisely and productively, yet didn’t rush in and out carelessly. What I think is even more important to emphasize is that I can honestly say I trust chapman brothers. As a homeowner I would typically feel vulnerable saying that about a contractor, but not for a second when it comes to Chapman. They are good, honest people who show absolute pride and craftsmanship in their work.

Needless to say, my family and I will be lifetime clients of chapman brothers and will continue to refer them to everyone we know.

I called Chapman because I had no heat on Friday February 3, 2023. The technician that called me back told me he would be there in 30 minutes, to my suprise he was there in 29 minutes. I have used Chapman plumbing and heating before, and I can tell you from experience that they are very reliable, and it didn't cost me another mortgage. Very reasonably priced. A very good company. Nobody paid me for this review, nor any free services. I speak only the truth.

We've used Chapman Brothers several times -- to replace a sump pump, a water heater, and most recently to repair a leaking pipe. They've always responded quickly and done a great job.

I would give this business zero stars if I could. The scheduling is completely non-transparent to new customers-- morning appointments take however long they take, but you are lucky if an afternoon appointment begins within the stated timeframe. This appointment was made 3 days in advance and the company was given MANY details about the extent of the issue. I had to call and ask if the plumber was even coming. Eventually one did come, but without the necessary equipment. He also told me that he had only been informed about the appointment 15 minutes AFTER I called to ask if he was still coming. I chose to not go forward with the service, as it was late in the day and the plumber would have had to leave for an hour to get the necessary equipment. However, I still had to pay 89 dollars for this guy to come into my house and say yeah, I can't do this.

These guys are great! Our initial call was answered promptly and the day of the inspection came quickly and went smoothly with Tom confirming the technician's initial analysis of the broken furnace. The visits were timely and professional. We were given an estimate and a rapid repair date even though it was a holiday weekend (New Years). The crew showed up (including the owner, Tom) at 7:30 am and they were done by 1 pm as promised even though I asked for a new thermostat at the last minute. Amazing same-day job by skilled plumbers and the final cost was the exact estimate, so there were no unwelcome surprises. They left the place cleaner than it was! Tom provided courteous service which is a rare find these days! Can't rave enough about them. Highly recommend them and will hire them again when needed.

Service call was yesterday. Tech was extremely knowledgeable. He was concerned about oil in ac overflow pan, good news is it must have been from old system so no extra charge there. I also thought I needed to reinstall a toilet because it was loose on the floor. Tech told me he could do it, but really all I needed was to shim it and caulk it. This was easy so I said I would do it myself. It is rare to find a company that is so honest and trustworthy. They are not looking to just make extra money by tacking on jobs. Today I called Chapman to install a Flo by Moen web enabled leak detector, their honesty earned them more business from me!

Nearly $2,000 to replace our 40 gallon hot water heater seemed pricey, but we had no time to shop around. The two technicians did a professional installation, although I'd give them low marks when it comes to friendliness and customer service.

Chapman serviced our steam boiler and diagnosed heating issues with mini split system. They were on time, professional and thorough. Would certainly recommend them.

My boiler of over 49 years decided to retire during the coldest week in January, when during the day we were lucky if it got into the mid 30s and a night in the teens. Of course now inside the house was like a freezer.

I contacted the Chapman Bros. A technician came out to my house the same day that I called to assess the situation and determined that the boiler must be replaced. That same day Tom came by to determine what supplies he would did to complete the install. I’ve been having an intermittent problem with Water Heater. Chapman brothers has replaced the gas valve. Although this has not corrected the problem, Chapman brothers has been working with me to remedy the situation to our satisfaction. I hear the employees of this company cut in line of long lines for gas during disasters.

Called them to have a Water Commander(tm) backup sump pump estimate and installation based on a recommendation by the manufacturer. A somewhat unknowledgable technician arrived to measure my home water pressure and it was 60psi. Seems pretty standard as normal psi is between 45ish to 75ish. (Just Google it) But this technician scoffed and said my pressure is too low for this product (despite the manufacturer insisted 40psi is the minimum so 60 psi is perfect). The technician stated he would check with his boss and send either an estimate for the Water Commander or an estimate for some alternate solution. After 1 week I heard nothing. I called back and explained that I was waiting for an estimate and the staff said oh well what do u want to do I said I want to have the water Commander installed. She said ok I'll order the part and get back to you. 1 month later I heard nothing. It seems that this company is too big and you don't get the service of a known neighborhood plumber. Customer Service is nominal. Technician who came to my house was not too knowledgeable. And after such terrible service they ask me for feedback. So here it is!

At this point it feels like I have had Chapman work on everything in my house except the pipes themselves. I mention this because over the last 18 months I have had them replace 2 Furnances, 2 AC units, 1 Water heater and help to diagnose a leak and fix the issue (toilet flange that settled and opened up a gap in the floor).

I have gone back to Chapman Brothers time after time because they are professional, their office staff is friendly and informative and their plumbers are personable, thorough and do high quality work. There are probably companies that you can get to do a cheaper job of it but it will cost you more in the end, what you are paying for is a company that is well run, well staffed and so far as I can tell stands behind their work.
