We had a leaking shower (head) and a faucet in the bathroom for several months, so based on our search in the 2011 Consumer Reports, we scheduled an appointment with Plumb Works last week. The scheduling part was easy, and the lady on the phone even gave us a discount coupon of $25 for being first-time customers. The only uncomfortable thing about the appointment was the $69 plumber dispatch fees, which would be waived if we decided to get the work done from them. The plumber, let's call him Mr. J, showed up on time (an hour earlier, in fact), had a look at the two leaks and prepared an invoice for fixing those. $272 for the shower, and $158 for the faucet. He offered the service plan for a year that would cost us only $30 extra for this job and would make us a priority customer for future jobs. We declined that, and even though the invoice price sounded a lot more than what we had expected, decided to get the shower fixed. Now let me mention here that the shower leak frequency was about 1 drop per second (and I'm not exaggerating). Mr. J looked at the shower faucet (knob) over and again, and had absolutely no clue how to open it. He tried to use force to pull the knob out, which obviously did not work. My wife and I were looking over his shoulder and pointed to him that there is a disc at the top of the knob's handle which gets unscrewed, but that is all we know. He unscrewed it, but could not figure out what to do next. He then concluded that he would need to take the whole panel off the shower wall to fix it. Coincidentally or on purpose, one of the panel screw's head was completely stripped which obviously made it hard to take the panel out. Mr. J prepared a new invoice containing an additional cost of $140 to drill the stripped screw. We decided we could not spend $400+ to get a dripping shower fixed, paid Mr. J the dispatch fees of $69 and figured we would just live with the leak. In the meantime, the 1 drop per second drip had now become a streaming tap because of whatever Mr. J did. Instead of admitting that the leak had got way worse than what it was and working out a deal with me, Mr. J kept repeating (at least 5 times), It's the same as it was, I need to take out the panel to fix it. Finally when his nerves calmed down, he agreed that it might have got worse and there's nothing he can do to bring it back to the way it was. At that point, I obviously wanted to speak with Mr. J's manager. Mr. J had a hard time explaining the situation to his manager. I was handed over the phone and heard a cheerful voice of Mr. L. I think I did a good job of politely explaining to him what the problem was and all I wanted from Mr. J was to bring the leak back to the way it was. Mr. L's cheerful voice was out of the window by then and he coldly said, This could just be a coincidence and it would only get worse. I need to go the whole nine yards and get the work done by Mr. J and there was no way to bring it back to the way it was. When I kept insisting, he said Mr. J could put a stopper in the shower head that would prevent it from leaking, which I was really glad to hear. BUT that would cost me extra because Mr. J was doing work on my house. I told him that he is having to do this work as a consequence of what he did himself, but he was not willing to listen. I just gave up, hung up the phone and asked Mr. J to leave. All this happened at around 11:00 am and pretty much ruined my day. I was not mad, but I was depressed that there are people out there who run a business without any integrity, honesty, moral values and courtesy. And such people are still in business. On my way back to work, I called up the lady who had scheduled my appointment and asked her if there was any way to file an official complain with someone in Plumb Works. She told me that she would have the owner of the company call me back, but that never happened. And Mr. J, if you ever happen to read this, there is no need to take out the whole panel. The front of the faucet DOES open up.
